Most popular puppy names for 2013 are a mix of human and classic monikers

I love when people give their dog’s human names (hence my dog’s name, Oscar). And I was tickled to see Vetstreet.com’s top puppy names for 2013, full of adorable names for your fur babies.

To come up with this list, Vetstreet has been compiling names since January 1, 2013 from a database of 925,000 puppies born this year. As you can see, names that you expect people to give their babies are now being adopted for dogs. For boys, Max, Charlie, Cooper and Jack made the top 10 list, while Bella, Lucy, Molly, Chloe, Zoey and Maggie were popular for girls.

So without further ado, here are the Top 10 Puppy Names for each gender:

Male Puppy Names:

  1. Max
  2. Buddy
  3. Charlie
  4. Rocky
  5. Cooper
  6. Duke
  7. Bear
  8. Jack
  9. Bentley
  10. Toby

Female Puppy Names:

  1. Bella
  2. Daisy
  3. Lucy
  4. Molly
  5. Sadie
  6. Sophie
  7. Lola
  8. Chloe
  9. Zoey
  10. Maggie

For the most part, the top 10 most popular male puppy names stayed the same. In fact, the top five were exactly the same as last year, with Max at No. 1 and Buddy at No. 2 for the eighth straight year.

The female puppies mixed things up a bit more. While Bella, Daisy, Lucy and Molly remained the top four for the eighth straight year, a new name entered the top five: Sadie. Lola, which had moved up steadily over the past decade and jumped three spots to land at No. 5 in 2012, actually dropped two places to No. 7.
