What a great event! An Arizona shelter held a “Senior Dog Prom” to bring awareness to the awesome elderly pups waiting to find their forever homes.

Saturday, all the senior dogs of Maricopa County Animal Care and Control attended a ‘senior dog prom,’ and the feather boas and tutus were out in all their canine glory!

About 20 dogs who were seven-years or older partied the night away at the gold and pink “Happily Ever After” themed prom, joined by their shelter ‘volunteer’ dates.

Melissa Gable, a spokesperson for the Animal Care and Control center said that they weren’t necessarily looking for the prom to be an adoption event, but more to share with people that there are really amazing dogs who are often overlooked because of their age.

The dogs were decked in their finest bow ties and tiaras and hit the dance floor four legs at a time, and they even selected senior superlatives Minnie Moo and Gotti as the Prom Queen and King. Queen Minnie Moo was adopted after the affair was over.

All dogs were adoptable, and eight others were adopted in addition to Queen Minnie Moo. All the adoption fees for the ‘prom-pups’ will be waived, and even though seniors are known to be more calm and gentle, judging from the prom party pics, they also know how to break it down!

Gable says that often people shy away from older dogs, thinking they don’t have much time left to live. But that’s an erroneous assumption, and many dogs live to be 15 or 16-years-old. Gable hopes that this awareness party shows people that there’s still a lot of life in these ‘old dogs,’ and you absolutely can teach them new tricks!

A California woman going through her own loss went looking for the saddest, most unadoptable dog she could find, and now both of their lives are now full of love. Melani Andrews lost her husband in January of this year, and a month later, she lost her dog. She was heartbroken, and knew life without them would be lonely. So, last week, she went to the Front Street Shelter in Sacramento, California and asked for the dog no one wanted to adopt. It’s not every day that someone asks the adoption shelter for the most unadoptable dog, particularly the oldest, as Melani was looking for. She wanted to give a dog who was unloved and unwanted a chance to not know the loneliness she’d been feeling, and she wanted someone share her life with also. According to shelter spokesperson Bobby Mann, Jake was the one. He was 12-years-old and is suffering from an untreatable terminal cancer. Jake’s skin is bad, his teeth are bad, and he’s just a mess. In essence? Exactly what Melani wanted. Mann says that Jake was a good dog but always overlooked because of his health conditions and his age, but Melani thought Jake was adorable. After spending some time at the shelter getting to know him, Melani knew he’d be the one that was going home with her. Jake now lives the high life, as if he’s always been a part of Melani’s family. He loves his backyard and little walks around his neighborhood, and he has a fleece blanket that he particularly favors. In fact, he seems so happy to have something comfortable of his own, he has a routine of arranging it over himself so he’s wrapped as snug as a bug before he settles into a restful sleep. New Company Claims Age-Reversal Treatment in Dogs Will Also Benefit Hu

A company out of Harvard University wants to use gene therapy on dogs to reverse aging, and hoping that there’s a future for humans as well. Rejuvenate Bio was co-founded by George Church from Harvard Medical School. He says that dogs might not just be lovable furry companions, but the key to helping their humans beat the process of aging. Rejuvenated Bio has carried out preliminary trials of gene therapy to reverse aging in beagles, claiming that if and when their process works, animals will be younger because of added DNA code and instruction to their bodies. Church said that clues about age-reversing in simple organisms like worms and flies have motivated them to look for bigger prizes in animals and eventually humans. He believes that gene therapy can increase life spans. He says they’ve already done trials in mice as well and once the trials in the dogs show more guidance, they’ll move to humans. Because of the controversy behind animal experimentation, they’ve kept much of their dealings out of the eye of the public. Church says that people love their dogs, so increasing the lifespan of dogs will be something people will want to do. The FDA process will be much faster, he says, and they’ll be able to move to human trials sooner as well. The company has already won a grant to look at enhancing the performance of military dogs, and Harvard is looking at patenting a genetic way of age control in certain species. It’s not just science fiction, they say. Rejuvenate will look to stop fatal heart conditions in spaniels and Doberman pinschers in an effort to get data tthat will help the work in humans as well. Gene therapy essentially works by inserting DNA code into a virus that then brings that code to an animal’s cells. They’ve already seen small successes in trials with mice. Church says that they are going to publish a report on a therapy that extends a rodent’s life due to the modification of two specific genes. He says the results of the study are quite intriguing. Church is clear to say he is hoping that he’ll eventually be able to use the techniques for his own age reversal and if the treatment showed itself to be safe, he’d try it. His ultimate goal is for people to have minds of 130-year-olds in 22-year-old bodies. Rejuvenate Bio has been reaching out to owners of Cavalier King Charles spaniels telling them that they had a gene therapy that could treat mitral valve disease in their dogs. Rejuvenate Bio’s CEO Daniel Oliver and science lead Noah Davidsohn went to the breed’s national show in Chicago and raised several thousand dollars for the trial for the mitral valve therapy as it kills half of the breed before they are ten years old. Patty Kanan is president of the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club and says the impact of their work is very important to the breeders. Rod Russell is the editor of CavalierHealth.org and says that there is no evidence that dogs can be made younger, and experimental drugs on pets is not okay. He believes donors are throwing money away. Additionally, there are ethical concerns if it is found to be effective gene therapy. Longer life spans may mean dogs outlive owners and could even end up in shelters or euthanized as a result. And because there is a legal grey zone when it comes to pet experimentation, the benefit to pets may not always be for the pet, but for a pet’s owner. Matt Kaeberlein is a University of Washington researcher who has been testing a drug to see if it extends a dog’s life. He says that just because it may, there are other ethical concerns about letting it happen.

Lost Dog Rescued After Surviving Six Years Alone in the Woods

A senior dog found living in the woods in the U.K. has been rescued and is now looking for a loving home.The dog, named Rose, was first spotted near Crawley Down in West Sussex, England. The Lost Dog Recovery UK South shared in a social media post that they’ve received a message from a concerned member of the public about a small black dog running in the road.The person who saw the dog “stopped the traffic” and let the pooch disappear into the woods, knowing it’s best not to follow. After visiting the nearest property, the person learned that locals were familiar with the dog and that drivers often stopped by saying that the pooch had been on the road. The locals explained that the dog was a stray fed by people.The individual who spotted the dog was troubled by the idea of a dog living in the woods and contacted the Lost Dog Recovery rescue organization with this information. Knowing that this could be a case of an “owned dog allowed to roam” the organization decided to investigate by setting out food for the pooch along with cameras to track its movements. The dog was caught on camera five times in two days and by the third day appeared to be waiting for meals.The organization also talked with residents in the area about the dog and were told that the dog was a stray who lived locally for about ten years. The residents also said that the dog should be left alone because was in good condition, fed, and cared for. After talking about this situation with another household, which has been leaving food for wildlife and were allegedly responsible for the dog’s care, the rescue decided to help the dog. Over the following week, the organization established a feeding schedule and confirmed that the pooch was indeed a senior dog. They set a trap for the dog by serving a warm roast chicken and managed to catch her.“Understandably she was shocked and scared, but very gentle, and was taken immediately to the warmth and safety of kennels,” the organization shared.  After taking her to the kennels, the organization made a shocking discovery - the dog was microchipped! Her name was Rose and she had gone missing from her owners less than 24 hours after they adopted her in 2017! A now 12-year-old Patterdale terrier, Rose, has gone missing from Ashurst Woods, located only six miles away from Crawley Down, where the organization found her. Unfortunately, there was no happy reunion for Rose. The organization managed to contact Rose’s registered owners, but they explained that they were in no position to take her back since their circumstances had changed dramatically and they had moved away. “After the initial shock, our absolute joy at finding a long-lost dog is tinged with sadness as there is no happy reunion for Rose; she never got the chance to know the love of her family,” the organization said in a post. They added that Rose is going to need time, patience, and rehabilitation, and being a senior dog she’ll likely need ongoing vet care and medication. Rose is going to be cared for by Last Chance Animal Rescue in Edenbridge, U.K. After sharing Rose’s story, the rescue received several inquiries about her from families willing to adopt her and give her a safe, warm, and loving home.“Please don’t leave a dog straying for longer than they have to be...not only for them and their wellbeing but also for the sake of humans who love them,” the organization added. Join the PetGuide community. Study Finds Link Between Having a Dog and Girls' Physical Activity

A new study finds that having a furry companion at home could help promote healthy physical activity in children, especially young girls. According to research from the Telethon Kids Institute in Australia, getting a new dog or losing a furry companion is linked with a child’s level of physical activity. This new research shows that having a dog could help promote healthy movement behavior in children. The study's lead researcher, Emma Adams, highlights the positive influence of dog ownership on children’s activity levels, pointing to potential benefits that start from early childhood.“We saw a significant jump in daily physical activity in children whose families acquired a dog over the study period, while those whose families experienced the loss of a dog recorded a steep drop-off in activity,” added Adams.The research teams from Telethon Institute and the University of Western Australia followed 600 children aged between two and seven years old, over a three-year period to determine the impact dog ownership (or loss) has on physical activity levels.The results showed that getting a dog or losing a family companion is associated with significant changes in children’s activity levels. Surprisingly, young girls showed the most significant response.“The results were particularly noticeable in girls, with girls who acquired a dog increasing their light intensity activity and games by almost an hour a day (52 minutes).”“On the flipside, there was a marked drop in light intensity activity and games in girls who experienced the loss of a dog, with their activity dropping by 62 minutes a day,” said Adams according to Independant. Children wore accelerometers during waking hours for seven days at a time to measure sedentary time, screen time, and physical activity. Parents were also asked about their childrens’ activity levels. Half of the children participating in the study didn’t own a dog at any point during the study period, 204 children had a dog for the entire three years, 58 got a dog during the study period, and 31 children lost their furry companion during the course of the study.Data showed that girls who got a dog increased their light intensity activities and games by almost an hour a day (52 minutes). At the same time, girls who lost a dog experienced a decrease of 62 minutes a day in the same activities. Researchers observed that unstructured physical activity, such as walking with the dog or playing in the garden saw an increase for both boys and girls who got a dog during the study. “If we excluded dog walking and playing, there were no changes in the unstructured physical activity, so we could see the changes in physical activity were actually from the addition of those dog-related activities,” said Adams. On the other hand, children who lost their dog decreased their unstructured physical activity by 10.2 sessions a week for girls and 7.7 sessions for boys. “Regular physical activity from an early age is essential for children’s physical and mental health development, but few children or adolescents are meeting recommended daily levels. Our findings indicate that having a dog in the family could help promote healthy movement behaviors in children and reduce their short- and long-term risk of chronic disease.”Although this study discovered a positive link between dog ownership and increased physical activity Adams stresses that it’s not a call for everyone to get a dog. “It’s important to note that we’re not telling families to just go out and get a dog - having a dog comes with many responsibilities and won’t be right for everyone.”Instead, this study encourages dog owners to use canine companionship to increase physical activity. Join the PetGuide community. Dog Helps Find Missing Child

Dogs can be heroes, and that’s certainly the case when it comes to the story of a very special police K9 in Auburn, Massachusetts. When a 12-year-old went missing from their home and couldn’t be found for roughly two hours, Auburn police knew that they had to work quickly, and Biza the dog played an integral role in the child’s rescue.Child Found with the Help of a Police K9 Named BizaAccording to a Facebook post by Auburn MA Police Department, information about a missing child was received around 10:30 p.m. on January 31, 2024. The child had been missing since around 8:30 p.m., when they had left their home. No one knew where the child could be, and the frigid temperatures made everyone worry even more about their safety.Because the child had last been seen in the Pakachoag Hill area, Auburn police officers, Massachusetts State Police troopers, and detectives got to work looking for them. But it would be Biza, the K9 partner of Officer Ljunggren, who would really come through and help the search end successfully that night.Following the Scent to a Missing ChildBiza picked up the child’s scent and tracked it for more than two miles. The police were able to find signs that the missing child had been in the area, so they kept up the search until they were able to find them and bring them home to their family just a short while later.This is one example of many times that Biza has helped police in Auburn succeed since she joined them in 2022 from Germany. Humans Are Getting Their Pets Sick – Here's What You Need To Know

Zoonosis are diseases that can be transmitted from other vertebrate animals to humans, such as rabies or Lyme disease, and has been around ever since we started domesticating animals. However, recent studies reveal that a new and lesser-known form of zoonose is becoming increasingly common: the reverse zoonose. This is the latest phenomenon, where disease can be transmitted from humans to their pets. Dr. Benjamin Anderson from the University of Florida was amongst the first to warn about the increase of reverse zoonoses. He said that more attention should be paid to disease transmission “in the opposite direction”, and that both pets and their owners can be threatened by it, especially when sharing close quarters with one another.“We’re starting to see a lot of examples of reverse zoonosis. Pets are more susceptible than, maybe, we previously thought,” he said. “Typically, the viruses that I will have as a human are not going to fit into the receptors that a dog or cat has.”This means that reverse zoonoses typically appear when a pathogen in humans mutates and then adapts to a new animal host. In the past, however, it was much rarer for this to happen, because humans and animals have a totally different biology.But now, the viruses like  coronavirus or influenza have a much higher chance of cross-species transmission. This is mainly due to their RNA-based genetic material, which is more likely to mutate or have replication errors. According to Dr. Anderson, there are several diseases that have been documented to transmit from humans to their pets. These include COVID-19, tuberculosis, swine flu, dengue, human-norovirus, and other viral, fungal, parasitic, and bacterial infections.To make matters worse, the highest chances for this to happen is with pets such as dogs, cats, horses, and ferrets, as they have the most genetic similarity to humans, being mammals. “We have to first ask how the pathogen gets into those animals in the first place,” said Dr. Anderson for  Phys.org. “The pathogen doesn’t develop out of thin air in animals before suddenly spilling over into humans. While pathogens certainly can move from animals to other animals and can be picked up from the environment, exposure to humans also plays an important role. It’s this constant back and forth exchange that happens over time, increasing the probability of a mutation taking place that allows the pathogen to infect a new host.”Dr. Anderson also noted the difficulty in tracking reverse zoonoses, as it is a big challenge to link the transmission of diseases between humans and animals. Because of this, Dr. Anderson advises pet owners to be cautious around pets, particularly if they are sick with communicable diseases, like COVID-19 or the flu. Maintain good hygiene around your pets, and avoid direct contact.

Animal travel has always been expensive, but it’s about to become unaffordable for many pet lovers. Pet owners moving abroad may be forced to leave their pets behind after animal travel costs have gone up by as much as 400 percent!IAG Cargo, a sister company to British Airways, Vueling, and Aer Lingus, has recently announced that it was raising travel prices along some routes beginning March 1. This unexpected move shocked pet owners with relocation plans, particularly those moving to and from Britain and the United States. “To reflect the complexities of this bespoke service and the cost of providing the very best care for pets traveling as cargo, we have made some amendments to our prices,” a spokesperson for IAG Cargo said in a statement. This shipping company is mostly used by military personnel to move their pets abroad while deployed. After three years at their duty station in the UK, Sara and her family are moving back to the U.S. The family’s two dogs, Bentley and Ghost, are booked on a British Airways flight on 1 March.Under the current policy, IAG Cargo only accepts a booking for a pet transfer up to six weeks before the flight. The company then confirms the space has been requested. Two weeks before the flight, once the planes have been scheduled on that route, the IAG Cargo confirms the booking, locking in the price.Initially, Sara’s family was quoted $1,450 for a flight from London to Baltimore for both dogs. However, due to the recent price hike, the travel price for the dogs has jumped to $6,500! And that’s without the administration fees and the cost of the agency the family is using to arrange the cargo shipment. “We are paying out of our own pocket for this, and we just bought a house in our new location,” said Sara to BBC. “Our dogs are like our children, we would do anything for them but that doesn’t mean it’s not devastating for our finances.”The family’s shipping agent found another airline that could ship their dogs at a lower price. The catch - they would have to make a seven-hour round trip to collect the dogs from another airport. Sara explained that her dogs are small in size and that she believes people shipping large-size dogs could face shipping costs over $10,000.“I already know a number of people who did not bring their pets [to the UK] because of the costs to bring them one way… People are going to be shocked,” she added.Details about the new pricing and affected routes are still unclear, but some companies that work with IAG Cargo are already seeing the effects. So, what do you do? How do you train your dog to wear a muzzle? This guide will dig into the importance of conditioning when planning to muzzle your dog. This includes explaining what conditioning is, walking you through the process step-by-step, and sharing some helpful tips to set you up for success. What is Muzzle Conditioning? Before expecting your dog to wear their muzzle, it is recommended that you take the time to focus on muzzle training, also referred to as muzzle conditioning. This is the process of introducing the muzzle alongside positive rewards. If each time your dog sees or interacts with the muzzle, they get “good things,” it will create a positive association. Over time, they will not only tolerate the muzzle but happily accept it. Why? They recognize that wearing their muzzle means they will receive good things like verbal praise, pets, and their favorite treats. How Long Does It Take for a Dog to Get Used to a Muzzle? There is no one guaranteed timeline when working on muzzle conditioning. While some dogs will quickly take to the muzzle, adjusting in just a few days, others will take longer. Some factors that can impact this include your dog’s personality, trainability, previous experience (positive or negative) with a muzzle, and their trust/bond with you as the person introducing this tool to them. It’s important to keep in mind that the time it takes does NOT mean you are doing better or failing at your training efforts. We have three dogs, all of which have been muzzle-trained. While two of our dogs took to the muzzle relatively quickly, Lucifer’s nerves and anxiety made the process more challenging. This doesn’t mean it was impossible. With time, patience, and consistency, he is now the dog that is most comfortable in a muzzle out of the three. We just had to move at his pace.
