For the most part, fleas cause minor irritation and itching, but in some cases, dogs have an allergic reaction to flea bites which can become very serious. Flea Allergy Dermatitis

Flea infestations are fairly easy to recognize because not only are you likely to spot the fleas crawling on your dog’s skin, but you will likely notice behavioral changes as well. Your dog will appear restless and he will scratch, lick, or chew on himself more than usual. Other signs of flea infestation may include scratching the ears or shaking the head. These are all common symptoms of a flea infestation but the symptoms of flea allergy dermatitis, or flea bite hypersensitivity, may be a little different. Dogs can develop this condition at any age, though it is most commonly seen in young dogs between 1 and 5 years of age.

Flea allergy dermatitis is not a reaction to the flea itself but to its saliva. Flea saliva can carry more than 15 different antigens and each one of these antigens has the potential to cause an allergic reaction in your dog. Common symptoms of flea allergy dermatitis include biting or scratching at the base of the tail, intense itching, hair loss or thinning at the base of the tail, scabs on the skin, and flea dirt on the body or in the dog’s bedding. Once a dog develops flea allergy dermatitis it is unlikely to ever become desensitized to flea bites – the dog will always be hypersensitive.

Treatment Options for Flea Bites

The treatment options for flea allergy dermatitis are no different than for the flea infestation itself. In all cases, prevention is the best course of action because once a flea infestation develops it can be difficult to eradicate all of the eggs, larvae, and adult fleas. Using a topical preventive is the best way to protect your pet against fleas and treat a flea infestation. Topical flea preventives typically contain both an adulticide and insect growth regulators (IGRs) – the adulticide kills the adult flea while the IGR kills the eggs and larvae, preventing them from developing into adults.

In addition to topical preventives, some veterinarians recommend the use of oral preventives. As well, flea shampoos may also be helpful in soothing your dog’s irritated skin and killing off the fleas. Not only will you need to rid your dog of fleas but you will need to clean his bedding and vacuum and treat the furniture and carpets in your house to prevent re-infestation. In cases of flea allergy dermatitis, your dog may require treatment with antihistamines or steroids to treat the reaction to the bites.

Treating the flea infestation in your home isn’t going to be a once-and-done effort. With the combination of fleas of different life stages, the cycle will continue for a while unless you go out of your way to remove every flea that may be hiding in the nooks and crannies of your home. To do this, you are going to need to commit to cleaning your house at least once a day, vacuuming the floor, and cleaning every surface.

You can help to speed up the process and add an extra boost of freshness to your efforts by sprinkling baking soda on any carpeted or fabric surfaces and allowing it to sit overnight. The baking soda will absorb any moisture in the area, drying out and dehydrating fleas and their eggs. As a bonus, the baking soda will also remove any smells from your carpet, leaving everything looking and smelling fresh when the infestation is finally gone.

You probably think of flies as a harmless nuisance, but the truth is that they can cause harm to your dog. A single fly bite may not do much damage, but multiple bites can lead to skin irritation and other reactions that can sometimes be quite serious. Here’s how horse fly bites (and other fly bites) can harm your dog and what you can do to treat and prevent them. Are Fly Bites Really That Bad? There are many different kinds of flies out there, but the kinds that are most likely to bite your dog includes stable flies (horse flies), blackflies, deer flies, and houseflies. When a fly lands on your dog’s body, it usually can’t do much damage because he is protected by a thick coat of fur. But there are certain parts of your dog’s body that are vulnerable to fly bites such as the tips and surface of his ears as well as the skin on and around his nose. Once you are finished sweeping and vacuuming, seal the bag in a plastic trash bag and dispose of it immediately outside the house. You may even want to give your pet’s bedding and toys a second cleaning just for good measure. Step Four: Prevent Re-infestation Now that you’ve taken the time to rid your house of fleas you need to make sure that a flea infestation doesn’t happen again. Two things can help to prevent this from happening. First, you should treat your home for fleas a second time three to four weeks after the first treatment. Second, you should treat your pet with a topical flea and tick preventive once a month. Ask your veterinarian for a topical preventive – the preventives you can buy at the pet store are less potent than what your vet can give you and some of them contain toxic ingredients which can harm your pet. Scientists Finally Know Why Cats Love Tuna So Much

No food is more synonymous with cats than tuna. Even the pickiest of cats can’t resist the tuna’s fishy flavor. Finally, scientists have learned why cats love tuna so much. In the study published in the journal Chemical Sense, scientists report that cats, like humans, have receptors needed to detect umami flavor. Along with sweet, sour, bitter, and salty, umami is one of the five basic tastes.Umami seems to be the cats’ favorite flavor. Considering that umami gives food a deep and savory meaty aroma, it’s no surprise that an obligate carnivore like a cat would prefer it over all other flavors.The research team also found that cats’ taste receptors bind to two chemicals found in high concentrations in tuna. These chemicals boost the umami flavor, making cats obsessed with tuna. “This is an important study that will help us better understand the preferences of our familiar pers,” says Yasuka Toda, a molecular biologist at Meiji University. According to Toda, this study could help cat food manufacturers create healthier food and more palatable medication for cats. Previous studies showed that cats have a unique palate. Cats can’t taste sugar, because their sweet receptor gene is dysfunctional. Scientists believe that felines lose the ability to taste sweeteners and carbs because they don’t need these macronutrients to survive. Cats also have fewer bitter flavor receptors than humans. This trait is commonly seen in obligated carnivores. “Since discovering that cats don’t have a functional sweet taste receptor, we did wonder what they would respond to instead,” study lead author Scott McGrane, a sensory science expert at Waltham Petcare Science Institute, told Live Science. Humans and other animals possess two genes - Tas1r1 and Tas1r3 that work together to detect umami flavor. Previous research has shown that cats express the umami-related Tas1r3 gene in their taste buds, but it was unclear whether they possess both genes needed to detect umami flavor. The research team led by McGrane discovered that cats expressed both Tas1r1 and Tas1r3 genes in their taste buds. To learn this, the scientist biopsied the tongue of a six-year-old male cat that had been euthanized for health reasons unrelated to this study. However, a closer look at the protein sequences encoded by these genes showed that they are very different from human genes. As it turned out, the main amino acids that activate umami flavor in people - glutamic and aspartic acid - were mutated in cats. “So I began thinking, maybe cats can’t taste umami,” said McGrane. But, as it turned out, amino acids don’t bind to the cat umami receptor alone. Nucleotides, which are common in meat and yeast, bind to the cat receptor and glutamic and aspartic acid then have an enhancing effect. “That’s the exact opposite of what we see in people,” explained McGrane. Cats love tuna because it contains the nucleotide inosine monophosphate. Tuna also contains large quantities of L-histidine, an essential amino acid for cats, that enhances umami flavor. “The L-histidine content of tuna is much higher than of other fish species and meat sources.”These new findings could be used for the development of tastier cat food and pharmaceuticals. Although cat food manufacturers already knew that cats prefer meaty flavors, they now have much more details about the compounds they can start working with. It’s essential for manufacturers to ensure that animals want to eat the food they formulate and find it appealing. “I think umami is as important for cats as sweet is for humans,” said Toda. They are also more likely to pamper dogs by perfuming them, pushing them in strollers, buying them clothes and gifts, or taking them to restaurants. Interestingly, the second place, and right behind Florida, is Alaska, with a score of 98.69 out of 100. Nearly half of all dog owners in this northerly state admit to regularly throwing birthday parties for their pooches, purchasing them special outfits, and even putting cologne on them. Scientists Finally Identify Mystery Dog Illness Sweeping America

If you are a dog owner in the United States, you have likely already seen the news reports about the mystery illness responsible for the deaths of several dogs, prompting veterinary professionals to caution pet parents about taking their pets out to public spaces. But we may finally be able to spot the light at the end of the tunnel… Dr. David Needle, pathology section chief at the College of Life Sciences and Agriculture at the University of New Hampshire, reported that scientists have finally identified the cause of the illness. While this doesn’t mean that life for our dogs can return to normal immediately, it does mean that they are one step closer to finding a cure and moving past this nightmare. The research article has yet to be published, but the team is sharing their initial findings to provide hope for pet parents and the veterinary community. The pathogen responsible for the mystery respiratory illness is described as “a funky bacterium.” “It’s smaller than a normal bacterium in its size and in the size of its genome,” explained Needle. “Long story short, it’s a weird bacterium that can be tough to find and sequence.” Searching for the cause of this illness wasn’t easy for researchers. Initially, there were no known bacterial, viral, or fungal pathogens, meaning they were searching blind. However, after testing 30 samples from New Hampshire, genetic material from an atypical bacterial species was discovered. The next step in understanding the cause of the illness and working towards a cure (and possible preventative) is to compare these findings to samples from dogs in other states to verify that it is, in fact, the same pathogen in all reported instances. Luckily for the human members of our family, there are currently no reports of the illness being transferred to humans. Until a cure has been identified, dog parents are encouraged to focus on preventative measures. Ensure your dog’s vaccinations are current, protecting them against known respiratory problems. Avoid public spaces like dog parks, doggy daycare, and grooming establishments where dogs may be exposed to the illness. If you must go to a public space, steer clear of shared food and water dishes. This Revolutionary Drug Could Help Extend the Lifespan of Dogs

In a groundbreaking trial that is set to launch in the United States, around 1,000 elderly dogs will be given a pill – in the form of a sweet treat – in the hope that their lives will be extended because of it. Behind this innovative work stands Loyal, a startup company based in Silicon Valley. They are currently gathering a number of senior dogs through a well-developed network of veterinary practices in all US states. The tests are set to launch before the end of 2023, after four years of complex studies.In this case, all dogs must be over 10 years old in order to be included in the study. The study itself is set to be a “randomized double-blind placebo trial”. The director of veterinary medicine at Loyal, the company behind this trial, Dr. Brennen McKenzie, said for  Telegraph that this will “probably be the largest clinical trial in veterinary medical history”.“We’re hoping to show that we can both increase the length of life and, more importantly, the length of time these dogs live healthy and happy and functional lives,” McKenzie states. “We’re looking at the length of time that dogs live on the drug and the placebo, hoping to show that we can extend their lifespan and also hoping to show that they develop less disease.”What the study will potentially show is that dogs who receive the drug will live one year longer - on average compared to those who are taking the “placebo” drug. Still, the length of life gained is only one aspect, Dr McKenzie said at the North American Veterinary Community’s Veterinary Innovation Summit in Kansas City. McKenzie also added that increasing health was their number one priority.“We think of lifespan as the amount of time that you live but healthspan is the amount of time that you have good health, good function, good quality of life,” Dr McKenzie said. “That’s clearly the most important thing”.All of this sounds quite “larger than life”, no pun intended. And, of course, with such advanced propositions, the trial drug and its contents are a closely guarded secret, especially due to commercial reasons. This will be the situation until the trial of the drug is finished. And if the drug happens to be as efficient as hoped, Loyal plans to place it on the market immediately, offering an affordable daily supplement that can extend the lives of dogs. “If we get through this four-year trial and we achieve our endpoints, the FDA will license us to sell this as a prescription medication and it will be the first medication ever to extend lifespan in any species,” Dr McKenzie said. “We are absolutely interested in a product that is accessible to the majority of pet owners.”It is worth noting that the drug in question was already proven to be safe for consumption, and there is a low risk of this potential supplement causing any unwanted side effects. Loyal is a company that has two other products in the works, and they are also scheduled to undergo extensive tests. However, work is not yet finished, and one of the two is expected to go on trial around 2026.
