J.M. Smucker Pet Food Recall for Euthanasia Drug Includes Gravy Train,

The FDA is alerting pet owners about potential pentobarbital contamination in certain canned dog foods manufactured by The J.M. Smucker Company. Pentobarbital is a barbiturate drug that is most commonly used in animals as a sedative, anesthetic, or for euthanasia, and if that sounds familiar, it’s because of the recent rash of recalls over the same contamination.


The positive pentobarbital results were found in certain cans of Gravy Train dog food, Kibbles ‘N Bits, Ol’ Roy, and Skippy brands. And even though the FDA found low levels of pentobarbital that is unlikely to pose a health risk to pets, this chemical should never be added to pet food and products. No illnesses have been reported, but the FDA is monitoring for reports.

J.M. Smucker Buys Rachel Ray’s Nutrish

J.M. Smucker has been in the news lately because of several dog food brand recalls, and now has announced they’re buying Ainsworth Pet Nutrition, known for the Rachel Ray brand dog food Nutrish. The J.M. Smucker Co. has announced they are buying Ainsworth Pet Nutrition for $1.9 billion dollars. Ainsworth Pet Nutrition is the maker of the Rachel Ray brand dog Nutrish, and the addition of this company will add Nutrish to Smucker’s other dog foods like Kibbles n’ Bits, Gravy Train, Skippy and Ol’ Roy brands. In 2015, the company bought Big Heart Pet Brands for $5.8 million dollars, veering off the path its most known for with its namesake jams and jellies. They are also producers of Folgers Coffe and Jif peanut butter. They are considering selling some of the human food product line, including Pillsbury baked goods, and looking to cash in on the 33% industry-wide increase the premium pet food market has enjoyed. It is estimated that bringing Ainsworth into the Smucker family will make pet food sales the company’s biggest business facet, bringing in about $3 billion in sales. Smucker joins General Mills in the jump to the premium pet food market, as in February, GM agreed to an $8 billion purchase of popular Blue Buffalo Pet Products, Inc.

More Dog Food Recalls Due To Listeria and Salmonella

Another group of dog food recalls has gone out, warning dog parents about the potential for salmonella and listeria–is your dog’s brand on the list? Last Friday, TruPet and Northwest Naturals recalled lots of their dog foods and treats, when salmonella was found in TruPet’s Treat Me Crunchy Beef Delight treats and listeria was found in Northwest Naturals 5-pound frozen Chicken and Salmon Chubs. The products were found by the Michigan Department of Agriculture but are sold in several states. The lot number for the TruPet treats is No. 201905143753 and the best by date for the Chicken and Salmon Chubs by Northwest Naturals is 15 082218. Related: FDA Issues Recalls For Several Raw Pet Food Companies Now, more dog food companies are recalling foods–the latest is Carnivore Meat Company, who said they are recalling their Vital Essentials Freeze-Dried Beef Nibblets Entree for Dogs because salmonella was found in a retail batch. This was also found by the Michigan Department of Agriculture, and involves cases of Vital Essentials that are from lot number 13753. Salmonella can manifest in some pretty serious ways in both animals who eat the food as well as people who handle the food or surfaces where affected food has been. Symptoms of salmonella in dogs can be vomiting, bloody diarrhea, fever and lethargy. It’s important that anyone who feeds their pets should always maintain good hygiene and wash their hands after. The last few weeks have been tough for dog food companies, as not only have several food recalls come out because of listeria and/or salmonella, but some have even been found to contain trace amounts of the drug pentobarbital, which is a drug given to pets when euthanizing. The FDA is investigating those pet foods made by parent company J.M. Smucker, and they are part of a list of several recalls since the beginning of February. Related: J.M. The FDA recommends any concerns about dog foods should be addressed with the food manufacturer as well as the state department of agriculture and the FDA.

J.M. Smucker Recalls 2 Varieties Of Milo’s Kitchen Treats

Two varieties of Milo’s Kitchen Dog treats are being recalled for possible elevated levels of beef thyroid hormone. It seems like there’s been one recall after another when it comes to dog foods and treats. In a massive recall, several products from J.M. Smucker have been recalled after trace amounts of pentobarbital were found in several of its dog foods. Related: J.M. Smucker is recalling products from their Milo’s Kitchen brand line, after concerns of treats containing elevated levels of beef thyroid hormone. This can increase thirst and urination in dogs, as well as cause weight loss, increased heart rate and restlessness. Consumers reported three illnesses after the consumptions of the treats, and the Food and Drug Administration says that symptoms that are associated with eating high levels of beef thyroid hormone may right themselves when the consumption is ended. They caution, however, that prolonged consumption can lead to increased severity in symptoms and may even include vomiting, diarrhea and labored breathing. The FDA recommends that pet owners who have fed their dogs any of the possibly affected treats contact their veterinarians immediately. The recalled treats are: Kitchen Steak Grillers/ Steak Grillers Recipe with Angus Steak: UPC Code 0 7910051822 7; 18 ounce bags with best if used by dates of 11/15/2018 and 4/26/2019Milo’s Kitchen Steak Grillers/ Steak Grillers Recipe with Angus Steak: UPC Code 0 7910051823 4; 22 ounce bag with best if used by date of 4/26/2019Milo’s Kitchen Steak Grillers/ Steak Grillers Recipe with Angus Steak: UPC Code 0 7910052776 2; 10 ounce bag with best if used by date of 4/26/2019Milo’s Kitchen Grilled Burger Bites with Sweet Potato and Bacon: UPC 0 7910052126 5; 15 ounce bag with best if used by date of 11/19/2018 Related: FDA Issues Recalls For Several Raw Pet Food Companies If you have any of these products, the FDA recommends the discontinuation of usage and contacting the company for recall guidance.

OC Raw Dog Recalls Products For Listeria And Botulism

A new dog food warning has pet parents examining their bags to see if the lot is included in OC Raw Dog’s recall of nearly 1600 pounds of food. OC Raw Dog, LLC., is recalling about 1,560 pounds of Chicken, Fish and Produce dog food that was made in October of 2017. According to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, there is a possible Listeria contamination that could be dangerous to pets and their humans. Related: More Dog Food Recalls Due To Listeria and Salmonella The recall is applicable to products with the lot number 3652 and have a use-by date of October 11, 2018. Listeria can potentially be fatal in the animals who eat the affected food, but for humans who handle it, it can also be deadly as well. The FDA says that even surfaces exposed to the food can be unsafe and recommend stringent cleaning. Pets can carry Listeria and infect their humans, and this can even happen if the pets are not showing any symptomology. Some symptoms in humans include severe headaches and fever, stiff joints, abdominal pain and nausea and diarrhea. It can be serious in young children or the elderly, or others who have weaker immune systems. In pregnant women, Listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirth. The following states may be affected as Lot of OC Raw Dog Chicken, Fish & Produce was shipped to them: California, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Vermont. To this point, no reports of illnesses in dogs, cats or humans who have come in contact with the product, but the FDA is still investigating. Related: J.M. The FDA claims that dried fish larger than five inches may be linked to botulism; the sardines used in the OC Raw Dog Freeze Dried Sardines measure between six to six-and-a-half inches, and OC Raw Dog has recalled them. To protect their consumers, OC Raw Dog will also change their sardine suppliers and say they will continue to only use ingredients and products the USDA certifies and inspects for human consumption. If you have either of the products, the company suggest you return to the store at which the product was bought for a full refund, and they encourage questions by calling 1-844-215-DOGS.

American Airlines Makes It Easier To Travel With Pets

They say to travel is to live, but deciding to leave a beloved pet at home can make you feel guilty - and bringing them along on an adventure can be tough on the bank account. No one truly wants to leave their four-legged best friend behind and figure out whether to hire a pet sitter or look for a boarding facility, but airlines don’t always make it easy for pet parents to travel with their fur babies.Finally, there’s some good news for pet parents and their four-legged companions! American Airlines has changed their pet policy, making it easier and more affordable for pet owners to fly with their fur babies.“On flights with American, you can bring one pet carrier as a carry-on if: You pay the carry-on pet fee; Your pet stays in the pet carrier and under the seat in front of you the entire flight,” shared American Airlines’ on their website. The company added that passengers can also bring “only one additional item on board with your pet” which can be a small personal item like a handbag or a purse, or a carry-on bag that meets the airline’s requirements and fits in the overhead bin compartment. The important thing to note is that you can only bring one with your pet carrier, not both.In the past, people who traveled with pets could only bring one small personal item abroad, which could fit under the seat. Anything bigger than that - for example, a larger carry-on bag that usually goes in the overhead bin - had to be checked, which was an additional $35. As an alternative, pet owners could transport their pets in the cargo hold if they wanted to take a bigger bag with them on the flight. Thanks to recent policy changes, people traveling with pets can now bring a pet aboard and choose whether they’ll travel with a carry-on bag or a personal item. At the same time, no changes to American Airlines' pet travel fee have been made. According to the company’s website, the fee remains fixed at $150 and applies per kennel, each way. For now, pet strollers must be checked at the ticket counter, and all checked bag fees apply. There are a few things to keep in mind before flying off into the sunset with your four-legged friend. All airlines are different. Every airline has its own policies for traveling with pets, so be sure to check the specific restrictions and fees on your flight before you book the tickets. Southwest, JetBlue, Delta, Alaska, and United are a few other airlines that allow pet travel, but each has its own travel requirements. Each airline specifies what pets can travel where. There are also limitations on the number of pets a passenger can bring abroad on different aircrafts. Only two pets in the same carrier can come aboard for American Airlines flights. Don’t forget that capacity is limited, meaning that checked pets are accepted on a first-come basis. Country-based restrictions also apply, and people traveling with pets should check and understand destination restrictions when traveling abroad.Lastly, whatever airline you decide to fly with, you have to find your pet an airline-compliant carrier. Husky Detects a Dangerous Gas Leak and Saves the Entire Neighborhood

Kobe, a four-year-old husky became an internet hero after saving his home and the entire neighborhood from a catastrophic gas leak. According to his owner, Chanell Bell, the canine started digging a large hole in the front yard of their Philadelphia home. At first, Bell didn’t think much of Kobe’s strange behavior. However, as the hole grew bigger, she became concerned that Kobe was trying to tell her something.“I trust his judgment because that isn’t his typical behavior and he is usually right,” said Bell, according to PEOPLE. “He has great senses and he never digs holes unless he is helping me dig; I knew something was up.”Earlier in the month, Bell had a gas leak in the house, and out of caution, she decided to check the hole Kobe dug with a gas detection device. “I had a reader already in the house to make sure there were no leaks coming from my old heater,” explained Bell. “When I saw the hole, I realized it was odd behavior for my dog. My intuition told me to check it.”Immediately the device detected gas. A potentially catastrophic amount of gas was coming from the hole Kobe dug in the yard!Bell alerted authorities right away and they informed her that the entire neighborhood should be grateful that Kobe detected the leak when he did. “We were told it could’ve caused serious health effects like respiratory issues, brain damage, and even death. They told me that something as simple as a light switch turning on could’ve caused an explosion, too.”As soon as they arrived at the address, the gas foreman and crew turned off the gas and started to work on the pipes. During the repairs, the crew discovered three other gas leaks in the neighborhood, all caused by old pipes. The crew worked for three days to repair the leaks and install new pipes. Workers told Bell that something as simple as turning on a light switch could have caused the gas to ignite and blow up the entire house. While they worked, the crew praised Kobe.“They were so impressed with Kobe and mentioned what a good dog he was,” said Bell, adding that people should always listen to their pets and their senses. The gas company said that it adds Marcaptan to the natural gas it administers to homes to produce a smell similar to rotten eggs to allow for easier leak detection. “Just like this customer, any time anyone smells a foreign odor or egg-like smell, they should immediately call,” said the utility company, in a statement. “It feels amazing to know Kobe saved our block, I am very thankful to have him,” added Bell. “I hope this spreads awareness to others about the dangers and severity of gas leaks and to pay attention to your fur babies!”  Join the PetGuide community. A Small Cat Family Was Found Living in the Ceiling of a Restaurant

Cats choose their homes in the unlikeliest of places! And a recent event from Massachusetts, when a momma cat and her four newborn kittens were discovered living in the ceiling of a New Bedford restaurant, definitely confirms this.The  Animal Rescue League of Boston said that they received a call from the employees of a local New Bedford restaurant. It was no ordinary call, however, as the employees said that they were “hearing kittens meowing from the ceiling”. The momma cat, however, was no stranger at the premises. The staff noticed her around the place before but did not suspect that she was pregnant – or that she was living in the ceiling. But hearing the distinct sound of kittens meowing, the employees were quick to understand what happened. The animal rescue team quickly responded to the call, and their field service agents soon spotted the tiny kittens through a small slit between the restaurant wall and a hole in the ceiling. With a little bit of patience and work, the rescue team managed to retrieve all four kittens from the ceiling space, and safely transport them to the rescue shelter. Rescuing the momma cat, however, was not as easy. Cunning and careful, the cat evaded all the efforts of the team, including artificial kitten sounds, and tasty cat food. Ultimately, the team employed a humane cat trap that they placed within the ceiling. The next day, they reported that the momma cat entered the trap at around 11 p.m. at night, which allowed them to reunite her with her children at the Animal Rescue League's Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center. There, they were all treated and given veterinary care."Community cats are incredibly resilient, and have a knack to find shelter for themselves and their offspring," the animal rescue league said in a subsequent statement for  NBC Boston. "However, kittens born this time of year are incredibly vulnerable to the elements and other potential dangers and ARL urges the public that if a cat with offspring are discovered, to contact ARL Field Services for assistance." In the meantime, the happy momma cat and her babies are resting and growing, until the time comes when they can be put up for adoption and find forever homes and each their own happy ending to this unusual story.

Why Does My Dog Eat Poop?

When it comes to eating, most dogs will eat just about anything – in fact, if it’s something that’s forbidden for them to eat or something that they really shouldn’t be munching on, their appetite only seems to increase. And unfortunately, that also includes poop. While it is definitely disgusting to see, it actually has a lot of science behind it. The behavior is called  coprophagia, and it is influenced by a lot of major factors. Getting to know them can help you better understand this odd behavior, and help you act accordingly. So let’s learn all about dogs and poop-eating.Why Does My Dog Eat Poop?Believe it or not, eating poop is a fairly common behavior in dogs. In fact, recent studies reveal that it is  in a dog’s DNA to eat poop. It isn’t, however, a behavior that should be ignored completely. Because it can give you insights into the health and mentality of your four-legged friend. If you spot your pet munching on the forbidden fudge, it could signal a major nutritional deficiency. So, basically, if a dog is lacking certain nutrients in their diet, they may seek to fulfill those needs by eating feces. Of course, it can also signal underlying medical issues. It is known that some medical conditions can lead to coprophagia, such as malabsorption disorders or  parasites. Coprophagia can also sometimes stem from behavioral issues, such as stress, anxiety, or boredom. Dogs may resort to eating poop as a way to cope with these feelings or out of sheer boredom. It can also come from simple attention-seeking. Yup, your dog can eat feces as a way to gain attention, especially if they've received a strong reaction from their owners in the past. And, if you notice that your doggo is nibbling on poop in the park or on the street, they could be attracted to the scent. The scent of feces attracts some dogs, especially if it's from another animal. Of course, neglect can also be a viable cause. Dogs that are confined in tight spaces or cages can exhibit unnatural behaviors, such as excessive eating of poop. It can also stem from anxiety, fear, isolation, or from problems related to diet. Either way, it is essential to consult with a veterinarian to rule out any underlying medical issues and to address any behavioral concerns. Of course, ensuring your dog has a balanced diet, plenty of physical and mental stimulation, and positive reinforcement training can help deter this behavior. Researchers Find Genetic Links Between Human and Canine Brain Tumors

In a groundbreaking study, researchers have discovered striking similarities between the most common type of brain tumor in dogs and humans - meningioma. These findings were published in the scientific journal Acta Neuropathologica. Until now, scientists struggled to find reliable experimental models to understand the biology of and develop effective treatments for these tumors. But thanks to these newly discovered similarities, doctors will be able to use a classification system that identifies these aggressive tumors in humans and pooches.“The discovery that naturally occurring canine tumors closely resemble their human counterparts opens numerous avenues of exploring the biology of these challenging tumors,” said Dr. Akash Patel, an associate professor of neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine and principal investigator at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (Duncan NRI) at Texas Children’s Hospital. “It also provides opportunities for developing and studying novel treatments applicable to both humans and dogs,” he added.During the study, researchers analyzed 62 dog meningiomas from 27 breeds and found that the tumors were remarkably similar to the same kinds of tumors in humans. To this date, this is the largest study of the gene expression profiles of the canine meningioma. Others, including Dr. Jonathan Levine, a VMBS professor and the head of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences (VSCS), and Dr. Tiemo Klisch, assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine and Principal Investigator at Duncan NRI, were involved in the study along Dr. Patel. Meanwhile, assistant professor Dr. Beth Boudreau was a key collaborator. Previous work done by Levine, Boudreau, and others at VMBS, which found similarities between gliomas - the second most common type of brain tumors - in humans and dogs, was instrumental for Patel’s study. “We ended up agreeing to provide Patel with canine tumor samples we had worked years and years to achieve, to see if he could isolate the RNA, which is not always easy to do,” said Levine, in a statement. “He was able to produce this very robust data set that showed a similar pattern structure to human tumors. Our team also provided Dr. Patel with key clinical outcome data, including responses to certain treatments.”Now that the researchers have found a link between brain tumors in humans and dogs they hope to establish clinical trials to continue their research. Setting up this type of clinical trial can take several years of planning and requires funding.“We are really interested in creating wins for both human and animal medicine,” said Levine. “For example, we hope to give dog owners access to therapy that’s not available anywhere else in the world through clinical trials. At the same time, that information will also inform the next step of human trials.”As it happens, another group of researchers from the University of California, Davis, conducted a similar study with matching results about meningioma in humans and dogs. This study was also published in the scientific journal Acta Neuropathologica.Now, the two research groups plan to collaborate in the future and share their findings to develop treatment options for both human and canine brain tumors. “If we do one trial, we’d be able to enroll patients a lot more quickly, which would make it easier to get larger data sets resulting in stronger findings. A Dog is Adopted After 7 Years in Shelter After An Emotional Discovery

One pet shelter in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, has been the home of a darling rescue dog named Ella for 7 long years. But the long wait for a happy ending is finally over – as Ella was recently adopted, and under very special circumstances at that. The staff at  Bloomsburg Animal Resource Center have titled this “an extremely special adoption”, and advised readers that “they might want to grab a tissue real quick for this one”.Ella had been at the shelter for the last seven years, making her the center’s longest resident. But recently, things took a turn for the better, when Ella was spotted by Kaitlyn, a resident who quickly fell in love with the rescue pooch. When coming to the center, Kaitlyn said that her long-time furry friend, Jo, recently passed away, and now she was ready to meet a new dog.And as soon as the two met, the match was made. It was obvious that they were meant for each other. Ella quickly made everyone know that Kaitlyn was her “human”. Usually, it wasn’t so. Ella was a victim of abuse and had a long history of fear and aggression. It would take several visits for her to get relaxed around strangers. But with Kaitlyn, this was not the case. The bond was near-instant. “She immediately walked over to Kaitlyn with no hesitation, allowing her to give Ella scratches and pets right away,” the staff of the adoption center said.At the end of the adoption meeting, when Kaitlyn was about to leave, she suddenly noticed something that made her overwhelmingly emotional. What she spotted was the bandana that Ella was wearing around her neck. Her eyes welling with tears, Kaitlyn said to the staff that it was the exact bandana that belonged to her recently passed away dog, Jo. She said that after the passing, she donated all the bandanas to the center. “This bandana that Ella is wearing, it’s Jo’s. I donated them all here when he passed,” Kaitlyn said, quickly showing a picture of Jo wearing it. The symbolism and the connection were incredible. It was a sign that the two were meant to be together. When they realized what happened, the staff was moved to tears: “Out of the 20 dogs in our shelter right now, this bandana. This specific bandana. Jo’s bandana. It was on Ella.”Later, Kaitlyn said that the bandana is a sign: “I like to think of it as Jo’s stamp of approval.”And so it was, that after 7 long years of waiting, the kind and gentle Ella found her new forever home, and a human friend who would treat her right.“Every morning, Ella used to pop up off her bed and greet you at the door of her kennel right away,” the staff at the Animal Resource Center said. “We’ll miss that tomorrow, it’ll be such a bittersweet moment realizing that as we pause to reflect on a few of our favorites times with Ella — but my goodness the amount of pure happiness we will feel every day knowing Ella finally got what she deserved: ELLA GOT ADOPTED.”
