We’ve all heard that dogs are colorblind, but is it true? Let’s take a look at this popular belief, and if it really holds true. Humans and dogs experience the world in very different ways. As a human, you have the ability to make decisions based on past experiences and with forethought of the future. As a dog, you live in the moment and the future is unknown. Dogs and humans are not just different in the ways they experience the world, but also in the ways they see it. Humans can perceive a wide range of colors while a dog’s vision is much more limited in terms of color. But are dogs actually colorblind? Keep reading to find out. Not only is this untrue but seeing only in black and white is only one form of colorblindness. Contrary to popular belief, dogs are actually capable of seeing color, though it is a much more limited range than you are able to see. Color vision is supported by specialized photoreceptor cells in the retina called cones. When these cones are stimulated, they transmit signals to the brain which is translated into the perception of color. The human eye contains three types of cones while a dog’s eye only has two, hence the difference in the range of perceivable colors. A dog cannot distinguish reds, greens, or oranges – they appear somewhere along the yellow-to-blue spectrum in a dog’s vision. Even though your dog can’t tell the difference between red and orange in the same way that you can, his ability to see detail and to see clearly in the dark is much stronger than yours. While dogs only have two types of cones in their retinas, they have more rods which results in stronger night vision and an improved ability to track movement. What Else Should You Know About Your Dog’s Vision? While your dog’s ability to distinguish different colors may not be as strong as yours, his vision is better than yours in other ways. Having fewer cones in their retinas means that dogs are not as good at interpreting color or brightness as humans – their strength lies in low-light or night vision. A dog’s retina has a higher concentration of rod cells which function better in low lighting to interpret motion. So, while your dog may not see objects as clearly as you, his ability to track motion is much stronger. If you add to that your dog’s sense of smell which is 50 times stronger than yours, it’s plain to see that your dog isn’t suffering for his lack of color vision. In fact, dogs are much better than humans at using all of their senses together. Because your dog can’t speak up and tell you when something is wrong with his vision, you need to keep an eye out for signs of a problem. If your dog starts bumping into objects, becomes nervous about moving around at night, or if his eyes start to become cloudy, it could be time for an eye exam.

Causes of Vision Loss in Dogs Blindness and vision loss is often simply a consequence of aging in dogs, but it can also be the result of several common eye conditions. Progressive retinal atrophy, for example, is an inherited condition that causes increase vision loss over time. This condition is not painful for the dog but it typically affects both eyes and often leads to total loss of vision. Glaucoma, on the other hand, is a painful condition in which fluid pressure inside the eye increases which causes damage to the optic nerves and retina. This condition can result in either partial or total blindness, though both medical and surgical treatments are available for glaucoma. What is Progressive Retinal Atrophy in Dogs

Just like us, dogs can suffer from a variety of vision problems. One of the most serious is called Progressive Retinal Atrophy, which can cause blindness in dogs. Your dog’s senses are much stronger than yours. While that is most true about his sense of smell, your dog’s ability to see is stronger as well. Unfortunately, many dogs are prone to eye problems that can hinder their vision or even leave them blind – progressive retinal atrophy is one of them. What is Progressive Retinal Atrophy? Commonly referred to as PRA, progressive retinal atrophy is an eye disease characterized by gradual degeneration of the retina in the eye. The retina is the part of the eye that receives light from the cornea and converts the light into signals sent to the optic nerve which the brain interprets as vision. Related: Living Well With Your Blind Dog Though it is a single structure, the retina contains other structures called photoreceptors, more specifically, rods, and cones. Rods help the dog to see at night while cones help him to see color. Progressive retinal atrophy causes degeneration of these photoreceptors which can lead to your dog eventually going blind. Causes and Symptoms There are several different forms of PRA, typically classified by the disease’s age of onset and rate of progression. In a healthy puppy, the photoreceptors in the retina develop after birth but before the puppy reaches 8 weeks of age. The first of these is known as retinal dysplasia and, when it happens, it usually affects the puppy before 8 weeks of age and the dog will typically be blind by one year. Retinal degeneration can develop anywhere from one year to eight years and the symptoms progress much more slowly. Unfortunately, progressive retinal atrophy is typically a genetic condition – if your puppy has it, there may not be much you can do to stop it. If you catch the symptoms early, however, you may be able to make adaptations for your dog. Signs of PRA begin with night blindness and eventually progress to a reluctance to go down stairs, sluggish pupillary response, cloudy surface of the eye, bumping into walls or furniture, and tripping or stumbling. The condition is not painful or irritating, however, so you won’t see any redness or inflammation of the eye. How is it Treated? There is no cure for progressive retinal atrophy and there is no way to slow the progression of the disease. While it might be a tricky transition for your dog, most dogs adapt well to a loss of vision since they still have other senses to rely on. If your dog develops PRA you’ll need to take certain precautions to keep him safe by keeping the furniture in the same arrangement and keeping him on a leash when you take him out of the house. Watching your dog slowly go blind can be heartbreaking but it helps to understand that the condition isn’t painful for your dog. In fact, many dogs adapt quickly to a loss of vision, so you may not even notice much of a change to his personality. Even so, it is best to seek veterinary care at the first sign that your dog is having vision problems.

Consider asking your veterinarian, groomer, or friends/family for recommendations. A Small Cat Family Was Found Living in the Ceiling of a Restaurant

Cats choose their homes in the unlikeliest of places! And a recent event from Massachusetts, when a momma cat and her four newborn kittens were discovered living in the ceiling of a New Bedford restaurant, definitely confirms this.The  Animal Rescue League of Boston said that they received a call from the employees of a local New Bedford restaurant. It was no ordinary call, however, as the employees said that they were “hearing kittens meowing from the ceiling”. The momma cat, however, was no stranger at the premises. The staff noticed her around the place before but did not suspect that she was pregnant – or that she was living in the ceiling. But hearing the distinct sound of kittens meowing, the employees were quick to understand what happened. The animal rescue team quickly responded to the call, and their field service agents soon spotted the tiny kittens through a small slit between the restaurant wall and a hole in the ceiling. With a little bit of patience and work, the rescue team managed to retrieve all four kittens from the ceiling space, and safely transport them to the rescue shelter. Rescuing the momma cat, however, was not as easy. Cunning and careful, the cat evaded all the efforts of the team, including artificial kitten sounds, and tasty cat food. Ultimately, the team employed a humane cat trap that they placed within the ceiling. The next day, they reported that the momma cat entered the trap at around 11 p.m. at night, which allowed them to reunite her with her children at the Animal Rescue League's Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center. There, they were all treated and given veterinary care."Community cats are incredibly resilient, and have a knack to find shelter for themselves and their offspring," the animal rescue league said in a subsequent statement for  NBC Boston. "However, kittens born this time of year are incredibly vulnerable to the elements and other potential dangers and ARL urges the public that if a cat with offspring are discovered, to contact ARL Field Services for assistance." In the meantime, the happy momma cat and her babies are resting and growing, until the time comes when they can be put up for adoption and find forever homes and each their own happy ending to this unusual story.

A New Four-Legged Robot May Soon Replace Guide Dogs

Robots aren’t only taking human jobs! Our four-legged colleagues may soon need new jobs because there’s a new AI-powered robot guide dog in town. Named RoboGuide, the four-legged robot guide dog was born and bred at the University of Glasgow. The research team that created the robotic pooch, says that RoboGuide could help blind and visually impaired people move more freely in indoor spaces. Their new design solves some of the most common problems in assistive tech.“One significant drawback of many current four-legged, two-legged, and wheeled robots is that the technology which allows them to find their way around can limit their usefulness for the visually impaired,” said Olaoluwa Popoola, the project’s principal investigator. “Robots which use GPS to navigate, for example, can perform well outdoors but often struggle in indoor settings, where signal coverage can weaken. Others, which use cameras to ‘see’, are limited by the line of sight, which makes it harder for them to safely guide people around objects or around bends.”To overcome these limitations, the RoboGuide uses a series of sensors that analyze its surroundings. Software created by the team allows the robotic pooch to find optimal routes between locations and interpret sensor data in real-time, so it can avoid hitting obstacles while guiding a blind or visually impaired person.This robotic pooch also obeys its owner. Thanks to large models, RoboGuide understands speech, and can even talk to its handler. The RoboGuide was showcased at the university’s Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Center. The team working on the prototype said that the robotic pooch uses several innovative technologies and that their goal is to release a complete version in the following years.Professor Muhammad Imran, dean of graduate studies at the James Watt School of Engineering and co-investigator on the project said: “Our assistive technology project for the visually impaired embodies innovation, fostering inclusivity.”“In Glasgow, we’re pioneering world-changing technologies that hold the potential to transform lives and reshape societal norms. This achievement was made possible through collaboration with industry and charity partners and co-creating the design with the invaluable input of end users.”The prototype was tested for the first time with volunteers at the Hunterian, Scotland’s oldest museum, in December. During the trial,  the robotic pooch guided the volunteers around the museum and provided interactive speeches on six different exhibits. With an estimated 2.2 billion people in the world living with some form of vision loss, the team hopes to create a commercial product to help guide visually impaired people indoors.“Ultimately, our aim is to develop a complete system which can be adapted for use with robots of all shapes and sizes to help blind and partially sighted people in a wide range of indoor situations,” said Wasim Ahmed, who’s also a co-investigator on the study.  The RoboGuide project is backed by two leading charities. Both the Forth Valley Sensory Centre Trust (FVSC) and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) are supporting the development of RoboGuide. “Mobility is a big issue for the blind and partially sighted community,” said Jacquie Winning, the chief executive of FVSC. “RoboGuide is a wonderful solution to that problem, and we are delighted to help test this innovative and creative robot.”James Adams, the director of RNIB Scotland, added: “We’re delighted to be supporting the research and development of technology that could be part of making the world more accessible and empowering blind and partially sighted people to live their lives confidently.”Join the PetGuide community. Animal travel has always been expensive, but it’s about to become unaffordable for many pet lovers. Pet owners moving abroad may be forced to leave their pets behind after animal travel costs have gone up by as much as 400 percent!IAG Cargo, a sister company to British Airways, Vueling, and Aer Lingus, has recently announced that it was raising travel prices along some routes beginning March 1. This unexpected move shocked pet owners with relocation plans, particularly those moving to and from Britain and the United States. “To reflect the complexities of this bespoke service and the cost of providing the very best care for pets traveling as cargo, we have made some amendments to our prices,” a spokesperson for IAG Cargo said in a statement. This shipping company is mostly used by military personnel to move their pets abroad while deployed. After three years at their duty station in the UK, Sara and her family are moving back to the U.S. The family’s two dogs, Bentley and Ghost, are booked on a British Airways flight on 1 March.Under the current policy, IAG Cargo only accepts a booking for a pet transfer up to six weeks before the flight. The company then confirms the space has been requested. Two weeks before the flight, once the planes have been scheduled on that route, the IAG Cargo confirms the booking, locking in the price.Initially, Sara’s family was quoted $1,450 for a flight from London to Baltimore for both dogs. However, due to the recent price hike, the travel price for the dogs has jumped to $6,500! And that’s without the administration fees and the cost of the agency the family is using to arrange the cargo shipment. “We are paying out of our own pocket for this, and we just bought a house in our new location,” said Sara to BBC. “Our dogs are like our children, we would do anything for them but that doesn’t mean it’s not devastating for our finances.”The family’s shipping agent found another airline that could ship their dogs at a lower price. The catch - they would have to make a seven-hour round trip to collect the dogs from another airport. Sara explained that her dogs are small in size and that she believes people shipping large-size dogs could face shipping costs over $10,000.“I already know a number of people who did not bring their pets [to the UK] because of the costs to bring them one way… People are going to be shocked,” she added.Details about the new pricing and affected routes are still unclear, but some companies that work with IAG Cargo are already seeing the effects. Kimberly Cirone, a director at Pets Abroad UK, a pet relocation company that assists pet owners with travel arrangements and works with airlines, said that the costs of pet transport between Britain and the United States have increased by 400 percent without warning, consideration, or explanation.The unexpected price hike has left many military families in turmoil as they are unable to gather the necessary funds in time to have their pets shipped back home. “It’s a huge amount to organize, and within days or weeks of arriving one of those family members may be sent on to areas of conflict. A Dog is Adopted After 7 Years in Shelter After An Emotional Discovery

One pet shelter in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, has been the home of a darling rescue dog named Ella for 7 long years. But the long wait for a happy ending is finally over – as Ella was recently adopted, and under very special circumstances at that. The staff at  Bloomsburg Animal Resource Center have titled this “an extremely special adoption”, and advised readers that “they might want to grab a tissue real quick for this one”.Ella had been at the shelter for the last seven years, making her the center’s longest resident. But recently, things took a turn for the better, when Ella was spotted by Kaitlyn, a resident who quickly fell in love with the rescue pooch. When coming to the center, Kaitlyn said that her long-time furry friend, Jo, recently passed away, and now she was ready to meet a new dog.And as soon as the two met, the match was made. It was obvious that they were meant for each other. Ella quickly made everyone know that Kaitlyn was her “human”. Usually, it wasn’t so. Ella was a victim of abuse and had a long history of fear and aggression. It would take several visits for her to get relaxed around strangers. But with Kaitlyn, this was not the case. The bond was near-instant. “She immediately walked over to Kaitlyn with no hesitation, allowing her to give Ella scratches and pets right away,” the staff of the adoption center said.At the end of the adoption meeting, when Kaitlyn was about to leave, she suddenly noticed something that made her overwhelmingly emotional. What she spotted was the bandana that Ella was wearing around her neck. Her eyes welling with tears, Kaitlyn said to the staff that it was the exact bandana that belonged to her recently passed away dog, Jo. She said that after the passing, she donated all the bandanas to the center. “This bandana that Ella is wearing, it’s Jo’s. I donated them all here when he passed,” Kaitlyn said, quickly showing a picture of Jo wearing it. The symbolism and the connection were incredible. It was a sign that the two were meant to be together. When they realized what happened, the staff was moved to tears: “Out of the 20 dogs in our shelter right now, this bandana. This specific bandana. Jo’s bandana. It was on Ella.”Later, Kaitlyn said that the bandana is a sign: “I like to think of it as Jo’s stamp of approval.”And so it was, that after 7 long years of waiting, the kind and gentle Ella found her new forever home, and a human friend who would treat her right.“Every morning, Ella used to pop up off her bed and greet you at the door of her kennel right away,” the staff at the Animal Resource Center said. “We’ll miss that tomorrow, it’ll be such a bittersweet moment realizing that as we pause to reflect on a few of our favorites times with Ella — but my goodness the amount of pure happiness we will feel every day knowing Ella finally got what she deserved: ELLA GOT ADOPTED.”
