Origin You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or, more fittingly, a dog historian to figure out where the Chesapeake Bay Retriever hails from. It’s not a trick question: the Chesapeake Bay Retriever does indeed trace the origins of its unique breed to the Chesapeake bay on the Atlantic seaboard of the United States. What’s unique about the origins of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, however, is that you can trace their lineage to two very specific dogs. These dogs, named Sailor and Canton, were brought to Maryland at the dawn of the 19th century and bred with other dogs in order to create a breed unique in and of itself. These two dogs weren’t Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, but they were known as Newfoundland dogs, which suggest that you can indeed trace the history of the Chesapeake Bay Retrieve further back if you want. The retriever has become a favorite in the Maryland and Chesapeake Bay area, even becoming Maryland’s state dog in 1964. Although the Dogue de Bordeaux took a heavy hit during the French Revolution, it regained its numbers throughout the years and a man named Raymond Triquet helped it to survive by taking the breed under his wing. The dog’s very tough history includes use in war, guardianship, and even training in hunting large game like bears, bulls, and jaguars. It was only recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2008.

Dachshund Basics You may know it as the “Weiner Dog,” but its actual breed name is Dachshund. Known for its long, stretched-out appearance and short legs, there are three types of Dachshunds: long-haired, wired-haired and short-haired. The only difference between the three is size and coat description; the distinct build is the same in any of the types. Boasting a regal and intelligent expression on its face, the Dachshund has a long head with protruding and arched eyebrows, a long muzzle with a scissor bite and very strong teeth. Its eyes are either brownish black or deep red. Another distinguishing characteristic is its long ears that are soft to the touch. If you’re looking for a happy addition to your family, you can’t go wrong with a Dachshund – it always has a friendly look on its face. Read on to learn more about the breed. The Dachshund was engineered for this hunting activity and it is directly reflected through its unique body shape. Its short legs let it burrow deep into the badgers’ dens and its long, sturdy tail gave the hunters a “handle” they could pull to retrieve the burrowing dog out from the den. As well, its large and paddle-shaped paws made digging efficient and its loose skin ensured it wouldn’t tear as the dog tunneled into tight burrows. The smaller Dachshunds were used to hunt hare and rabbits, while the larger ones caught smaller animals like otters and foxes. Interestingly, the smooth-haired type of Dachshund is believed to be the oldest of the tree, with the wiry and long-haired variants being developed later in the breed’s history. While originally developed to be used for hunting, in the 1800s, Dachshunds moved from hunters to cherished and pampered pets. It is then when the dogs were bred to be smaller in size- the Dachshunds became about 10 pounds lighter in this transition. Not unlike most small dogs in that period, Dachshunds were beloved lap dogs of ladies and nobles, and started enjoying all of the perks that came with their new status. However, while the cutie pie nature of Miniature Bulldogs is undeniable, there are some aspects of this pooch that remain controversial amongst dog aficionados. There is a great deal of debate regarding the name “miniature bulldog”. Some breeders give this name to a hybrid mix of a purebred Bulldog with a purebred Pug while others simply breed purebred Bulldogs down for size. The name Toy Bulldog refers to an extinct breed of dog that existed in England during the 18th and 19th centuries. This breed was created by crossing English Bulldogs with French Bulldogs to decrease their size to less than 20 lbs. Dogs May Have Been Man’s Best Friend For More Than 27,000 Years

Researchers have found that the bond between man and dogs may go back anywhere from 27,000 to 40,000 years. They still love their packs, often bay at the moon, turn in circles to tromp down their sleeping spaces, kick up a heck of a lot of earth to cover their poop “trail” and have a penchant for anything meat-like. Yes, our pooches still bear many similarities to their ancient counterparts and according to a new study, some much more than others. You see, researchers have been able to connect the dots that show modern day pooches have a history of special relationships with human folk that date back between 27,000 to 40,000 years! Yes, this amazing connection we have with Rover goes back a long way and some of the brightest minds in the world are devoting some serious little grey cells to explore how and why it started. Related: Science Proves There’s Such A Thing As Dog People And Cat People The catalyst was the discovery of a small piece of bone that was found during a routine expedition to the Taimyr Peninsula in Siberia. The type of animal was unknown so it was sent for genetic testing which revealed it was a wolf – not unusual for the region. But after a decision was made to radiocarbon date the bone, the explorers realized what they had was a 35,000-year-old bone from an ancient Taimyr wolf. Prior to this discovery it was thought the ancestors of modern-day dogs diverged from wolves around 16,000 years ago – after the last Ice Age. The DNA from this ancient specimen reveals that the Taimyr wolf is in fact the most recent common ancestor of modern wolves and dogs. Related: If You’re Happy And You Know It… So Does Your Dog! Even more interesting, evidence shows that modern-day Siberian Huskies and Greenland sled dogs share an unusually large number of genes with this particular creature. So yes, that Husky pup playing with your kids in the yard has some serious ancestry with a wolf that roamed Northern Siberia 35,000 years ago! But we’ve always known dogs date back thousands of years, how does this new information prove they ever had relationships with humans? The author of the study, Pontus Skoglund of Harvard Medical School and The Broad Institute, feels it’s possible a population of wolves remained relatively untamed but tracked human groups to a large degree, for a long time. Hmmm… kind of like that stray that followed you home, but bigger and tenfold! Also leaning towards the theory that wolves were ingratiating themselves into the world of humans is the Swedish Museum of Natural History who feel these new findings point in one of two directions: either dogs were domesticated much earlier than is generally believed or there was a divergence of two wolf populations and one subsequently gave rise to modern day wolves. They feel the latter is a less likely explanation as it would require the second strain of wolves to have become entirely extinct. Again, this points to earlier domestication. We’ve all heard the claims – there are all-natural essential oils that keep ticks off of dogs. But have you ever seen them work? As a general rule, they are disgusting and awful. Tiny little creatures that cause big problems. The kind that ruins a day for everyone. I took my time to find a good crop of ticks too. On every shed hunt, hike, scooter, and run, I brought along a jar, and eagerly searched my legs, and the dogs for ticks. I collected over 600 ticks in various places around my home. “But why, Kevin? Have you gone cray-cray?” you may ask. Don’t fear for my mental health. My tick stalking was done all in the name of science! I did it for you (and your dog).Because it is the season for the little pests, I was inundated by social media posts, recommending recipes for natural anti-tick spray. From holistic solutions to crafty projects, every post claimed to be the most effective option out there and every ‘formula’ appeared to be different. I am all for natural products and totally against ticks, so I thought I would test these DIY claims out for myself. It couldn’t hurt to try, right? After all, it’s important to know when these sorts of recipes are legitimate and when they are merely a trendy trick. A lot of times, these homemade natural solutions can turn out to be total duds, but in the rare instances when they are not, they are amazing. In my book, this made it worth the research!Just like the experiments we did in high school science class, I’ve outlined my method and testing procedures below. I did this with great care and scientific accuracy. I hope you appreciate the work.Why Essential Oils?Why did I even want to try essential oils? Well, let’s just be real. With more and more claims of holistic healing and prevention, I figured I’d not be a good human and pet parent if I didn’t even try to see if they’d be both effective and safe for my dogs. The reality is that ticks are a big deal and can make a dog’s (and his human’s) life pretty miserable. Lyme disease in dogs and their humans is no joke and can have some pretty debilitating consequences. If I could find a more natural way to stop ticks from attaching themselves to our pack, I’m all for it. That’s the dream.Now, just in case you were concerned, don’t worry- my dogs weren’t used as tick bait. The specimens I collected weren’t attached to my dogs, but they were crawling on me, in the grass, or sitting loose on the dogs. Seriously, there are ticks all over these woods. I even found a few ticks that had recently fed on a host and I collected those as well. I put together quite the tick collection. Each was based on natural ingredients and each claimed to be the one that will take away all your tick troubles with a few spritzes. They all included different essential oils, including Lavender, Tea Tree, Eucalyptus, Peppermint and Lemon Grass. Much more pleasant than my typical store bought cans of chemical sludge. It would even make my dogs smell like a dream as a side-effect. The only question was, would they work even remotely as well as the gross pesticide stuff?For the experiment, I separated all my ticks into five groups of 100 (seriously, I collected a lot of ticks!). Each group had a balanced cross section of ticks in order to test each recipe’s effectiveness. Some were in the nymph stage, while others were hungry adults, and each group contained a tick that had recently been fed. I know I’ve been all over the berries the past few weeks, but I want to take advantage of the berry bounty while the picking is good! And if you’re like me, you’ll want to make a batch of my Strawberry Banana Dog Treats. I did a little something extra with these cookies – I was feeling creative, so I decided to decorate them with dog-friendly icing (touched with a pink hue). With or without the icing, your dog will think these treats are berry delicious! Can Dogs Eat Strawberries? You bet they can! In fact, along with blueberries, strawberries are some pretty fantabulous nutritional boosts for your doggo. Just like blueberries, strawberries are full of antioxidants. Antioxidants are good for your dog because they neutralize the effects of chronic inflammation your dog may suffer. Antioxidants are great for any dog but especially for dogs who may suffer from any type of chronic inflammatory condition. Strawberries also are full of Vitamin C and they’re high in fiber. Why is that good? Well, Vitamin C is great for helping strengthen your dog’s immune system and fiber is what keeps things moving through your dog’s digestive system. Good fiber will help your dog absorb the nutrients he’s supposed to from the food he eats, and that means he’s healthier overall. Plus, good fiber will ensure that his colon is clean and his poop is perfectly scoopable becuase it’ll be just the right consistency. As an added bonus, strawberries have an enzyme in them that will help keep your dog’s teeth whiter. Strawberries can be a lot of sugar, though, even good sugar, so that’s why including them in recipes where they are balanced with other ingredients. Speaking of other ingredients… Why do dogs go bananas for bananas? Aside from the fact that dogs find them delectible, banansa are full of dietary fiber, potassium, Vitamins B6 and C and magnesium. Consider them sort of a super food, if you will. They can help a doggo’s upset tummy (think of the BRAT diet for humans: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast) and they can even give a dog some low-calorie energy boosting if you’ve got an older pup who’s starting to feel his age. Lots of dog pawrents freeze banana slices and toss to their pups so they can avoid salty or fatty treats and dogs think they’re being spoiled rotten when they do! Peanut Butter Is Health Food? You bet it is. Sort of, at least! It’s loaded with protein, healthy fats and Niacin. The importance of protein is key. It’s what your dog needs for healthy muscles and a healthy immune system. More, peanut butter has tons of fats. But not the “Does this peanut butter make my butt look fat?” fats. No, the healthy fats that your dog needs for a well-balanced skin and a shiny, maintained coat. They also help keep his brain nice and agile, which is important when you’re guarding the house from falling leaves! Just make sure when buying and including peanut butter, you don’t buy any or give any with xylitol to your dog! Xylitol can be lethal for your dog. Don’t forget Niacin, which breaks sugars and fats down and turns them into energy. It’s also good for your dog’s gut, and good gut health is key to good overall health. Adoptable Dog Of The Week – Sam

Don’t let the name fool you – Sam, our Adoptable Dog of the Week, is one pretty lady! Hailing from Montgomery, Alabama, Sam is an adult female German Shepherd who can’t wait to meet her new family. She’s already spayed, housetrained, purebred, up to date with shots, good with kids, good with dogs, and good with cats. Sam’s Story: Perhaps you’ve heard of “A Boy Named Sue?” Well, I am a girl named Sam. I’m not sure why, but Sam I am. Maybe it was short for Samantha, but it’ll do. I really like people and I try hard to please them, but I get a little worried when they leave the room or leave the house. I’m a good girl – I wait for them to get back, I don’t tear anything up. My last family had me tied outside most of the time so I’m still getting used to being in the house. I like these other dogs in my foster home when they are not bossing me around, but mostly I like people. I haven’t met the little creatures up close and personal so I don’t know if I like them yet. I’m trying to be good, but I get excited and like to jump up to say hi to my foster mom every time she moves. She said I need activities because I use my nose to check out everything when we go for a walk. New Study To Examine Why Owners Surrender Dogs To Shelters

Is incompatibility the main reason why people surrender their dogs? Researchers want to prove if dogs pick up on human behavior, in order to end to shelter over-population and euthanasia practices. Find out how you can help. Why would anyone ever hand their pooch over to the pound? That’s exactly what the Center for Canine Behavior Studies (CCBS) is aiming to figure out through its voluntary Animal Ownership Interaction Study, which kicks off on June 15. But the bigger goal here is to identify the issues behind dog abandonment, address them, and stop the influx of pups that end up in shelters and too often, in the long line to be euthanized. That’s just one figure for one country. But animal euthanasia is a global problem. CCBS wants to end this practice by learning more about how dogs and their owners interact. The root of the problem Your dog’s personality is probably the reason you love him so much. Unfortunately, behavior is also the top reason that pet owners turn their dogs over to animal shelters. It could be problems with aggression, separation anxiety, or what we perceive as simple incompatibility. But it’s not that simple. CCBS holds firm that “the relationship between a pet and a person is diadic.” To put it in layman’s terms, it takes two to tango – or in this case, to clash. Your behavior rubs off on your dog, so there’s a chance if your dog is displaying undesirable characteristics, they may actually be inadvertently caused by you. The Animal Ownership Interaction Study The study, led by CCBS’s Dr. Dodman and Dr. Serpell of the University of Pennsylvania, is the largest of its kind, examining how dog owners’ personalities and dogs’ behavior are related. It will span two years and cover the whole globe, including thousands of “citizen scientists” who will help explore the ins and outs of the human-canine bond. Participants will be asked to answer 100 questions online (it’ll only take 30 minutes) and follow up every six months over the two-year term. The results are expected to shed light on how human actions influence those of their pets. Better interaction between owners and dogs can mean better behavior, less shelter drop-offs and ultimately, fewer dogs being euthanized. Out to change the world for mill dogs, The Puppy Mill Project works to expose, educate, and offer alternatives in a growing movement to shut down puppy mills once and for all. Who doesn’t love a puppy? Those big brown eyes, that wet nose, a fluffy tail that tickles your toes. It’s hard to imagine these lovable little guys as “products.” But to puppy mill operators, they’re just a commodity. The big problem with puppy mills, aside from the torturous conditions under which animals are kept, is that many people are simply unaware of how common they are, and seemingly reputable puppy dealers, like pet stores, are helping to keep these puppy production lines in business. The Puppy Mill Project (TPMP), a Not For Profit corporation, is working to change that by creating awareness by educating the public. “Ninety nine percent of all pet store puppies are puppy mill puppies,” states the organization’s website. As long as the demand for these dogs exists, puppy mills will continue to operate. By exposing the facts about puppy mills, TPMP aims to point would-be pet parents to alternative sources for furry friends, like animal rescues, adoption and responsible breeders that operate under the “humane model.” By cutting off puppy mills’ business and profits, TPMP hopes to shut down these pitiless puppy factories. When you purchase a puppy at your local pet store, the chances are pretty good that it came from a puppy mill. According to TPMP, approximately 2.5 million puppies are born in puppy mills every year. To maximize their profits, puppies are denied medical care, while the breeding dogs (some 400,000 of them) are kept, caged, starved, lack medical care, and many never see the light of day – or another day. The sad truth is that the United States Department of Agriculture, which is charged with monitoring some 3,300 commercially licensed breeding facilities, simply doesn’t have the means to keep tabs on them all, not to mention the unlicensed facilities. 7 Ways To Improve Your Pooch’s Dog Kibble

Is your pooch turning his nose up at his food? Dog kibble can be a bit boring, but you can make it appetizing again with these safe and healthy pup-friendly hacks! A high-quality dog kibble is a healthy meal for your four-legged friend, but that doesn’t mean you can spruce it up now and then. Some of these added extras will act as an extra tasty treat and others will help improve the nutritional content. Plus, some will do a bit of both. While it’s okay to add a small amount of “people food” to your dog’s diet, avoid anything that’s unsafe for canines. Soak it in Juice Freshly juiced fruits and vegetables can be extremely good for your dog, containing a number of essential vitamins and minerals. A great way to improve dog kibble is to soak it in fruit and vegetable juice for half an hour or so, before serving. This will soften the kibble somewhat which some dogs prefer. Yes, it’s a gross topic, no doubt. But it’s a very important one as well, and we need to talk about it. Cats are creatures known for vomiting every now and then. If you’ve ever owned a cat, you know that they occasionally throw up hairballs or food. And pet parents might even joke about the panic they experience when they realize their cat is about to throw up on the rug. But this isn’t always something to take lightly. While vomiting might be normal in some cases, in others, it is a problem that should be addressed with the help of a veterinarian. When does vomiting become a reason to worry, and when should a cat be taken to the vet for a checkup because of vomiting? To provide some guidance, we’ll cover some basic information on vomiting and why it happens. Generally, they are described as being shaped like a cigar. And, as you clean it up, you might be surprised by how thick the clump of fur actually is. When a cat is getting ready to throw up a hairball, you will see and hear her retching before she vomits. However, if you see her doing this but she doesn’t produce anything, it’s best to call your veterinarian because something else might be going on that needs to be checked out. Throwing up hairballs usually isn’t something that you need to be too worried about, as it’s considered a normal behavior for cats. Some cats will get rid of hairballs more often than others, and this is also typically considered normal. However, if you aren’t sure if your cat is vomiting hairballs more often than what would be considered normal, consult with a vet. Or, if you notice that your cat is vomiting hairballs more often than she usually does, it’s best to call your veterinarian to make sure your pet is okay.   Your Cat Ate Something She Shouldn’t HaveAnother reason why a cat might vomit is because she ate something that she wasn’t supposed to. For example, spoiled food, plants, poisonous materials, and objects, such as string, might cause a kitty to vomit. Also, if a foreign object is causing an obstruction, vomiting might take place. In this case, vomiting is your cat’s natural way of getting rid of something that isn’t good and shouldn’t be in her body. Basically, by throwing it up and eliminating it that way, the risk of it causing problems is reduced or eliminated.   Because of the risk of your cat ingesting something she shouldn’t, it’s important to take steps to keep her safe. Look for objects, substances, food, and materials throughout your home that your cat might be tempted to lick, bite, chew on, or swallow. Then, make sure to keep those out of reach of your frisky feline. And if you suspect that your kitty is vomiting because she ate something that’s bad for her, let your veterinarian know right away, as you’ll want to take action to ensure she’ll be fine.  Medical Conditions and Allergies Sure, vomiting might not be a reason for concern in some cases, but there are also various medical conditions that might cause vomiting. For example, if your kitty has a gastrointestinal problem, such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), vomiting might occur. Also, if there are internal parasites, or if there’s an infection or an underlying disease like hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or kidney disease, vomiting might be a symptom of the problem. And gastrointestinal growths, whether benign or malignant, might lead to vomiting as well. All of these conditions should be addressed, not ignored, and your veterinarian will be able to guide you at every step to help your kitty feel better. Another thing to keep in mind is that a kitty might vomit if she has a food allergy. Your veterinarian can figure out if this type of allergy is to blame for your cat being unable to keep food down, and will also work on figuring out what is causing the allergy. Adjusting your pet’s diet may be necessary to avoid certain ingredients that don’t agree with your cat’s body, but it will all be worth it because your cat will get relief. The point here is that, because vomiting might be a sign of something more serious going on, it’s wise to talk to your veterinarian to get some answers. Also, if your furry friend is exhibiting other symptoms in addition to the vomiting, your vet can examine her, determine if a medical problem is to blame, and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Your Cat Needs to Eat If your kitty hasn’t eaten in a while, she might end up throwing up some liquid, and it might also look foamy. However, this could also be caused by your pet’s stomach being empty.  Foamy fluid – If there is inflammation or irritation within the digestive tract, your furry friend might throw up a foamy, white liquid. Also, as mentioned above, if she goes a while without eating, she might throw up a foamy fluid that’s white or yellow in color. And she might even throw up a foamy liquid before throwing up a hairball.Green liquid or yellow bile – If your cat’s stomach is empty from going a while without eating, she might end up vomiting bile that looks yellow. And if the vomit is green, this may be the result of bile being mixed in, too. However, this might also occur if your kitty is refusing to eat or if she has a medical condition that needs to be treated by a veterinarian.   Brown fluid – If your cat vomits and you find brown liquid, it might just be that she ate something brown. However, this type of vomit might also indicate that there might be blood in the gastrointestinal tract, perhaps because of a foreign body or ulceration.  Blood – If you notice blood in your cat’s vomit, alert your vet. Depending on where the blood is coming from, it might appear red or it might look like coffee grounds. Perhaps it’s because your kitty has been vomiting a lot and the esophagus or stomach became irritated. Or, this might indicate poisoning, a medical condition, or an ulcer.  Remember, when you talk to your vet about your cat’s vomit, don’t be reluctant to go into detail about the color, consistency, and overall appearance of it, as well as how much your kitty is vomiting and how often it’s happening.  Also, bear in mind that, even if your cat’s vomit looks like it might be caused by something benign and temporary, this might not necessarily be the case. If your pet is throwing up a lot of any of the above types of vomit, if she’s vomiting often, or if she is making attempts to vomit but nothing comes out, contact your veterinarian right away. When to Call the VetIf your kitty is vomiting a lot—such as more than once a day or for several days in a row—it’s best to call your vet for a checkup. Also, if you notice any other symptoms, such as a change in your pet’s appetite, an inability to keep food down, weakness, lethargy, changes in behavior or grooming, or blood in the vomit, it’s time to take the vomiting seriously and call your veterinarian.No matter how experienced you are as a cat owner, seeing your pet vomit can be unnerving and make you wonder if something is wrong with your companion. Never hesitate to call your veterinarian to ask them questions about your furry friend’s condition if you aren’t sure. It’s better to be safe than sorry, and to address a problem as soon as possible before it progresses.  Diagnosing the Cause of the VomitingVomiting that’s considered chronic or severe is a cause for concern, and it can lead to other issues, such as dehydration and electrolyte imbalance, so you should talk to your vet right away. Acute, minor vomiting that only lasts a short while, on the other hand, might not be a serious issue, but you may want to ask your vet to be sure. Again, there’s no shame in asking questions about your unique feline and what is considered normal for her!Whether or not the vomiting is worrisome will depend on what your veterinarian finds during an examination. In addition to discussing the frequency of the vomiting and the way the vomit looks, be sure to tell the vet about all of your pet’s symptoms. You can also talk about her overall behavior and any changes you’ve noted in the way she’s been acting. And, if you’ve changed your cat’s food or introduced a new food or treat, let the veterinarian know about that, too.   There are several things that vets can do to figure out what’s going on. For example, your vet can perform tests, such as a fecal exam and blood test, to figure out if there are any diseases, parasites, or toxicity that’s causing the vomiting. They might also order a biopsy to rule out conditions like IBD or cancer. And imaging tests like an ultrasound or x-rays can be used to see if there are any ailments of the gastrointestinal tract that might be causing the vomiting, if there are foreign objects in the digestive tract, or if there are masses that are causing problems. Also, if food intolerance or allergies are suspected, they might advise doing a food trial or elimination diet to figure out which ingredients need to be avoided. Treatments Are AvailableVeterinarians can provide a range of treatments to help a vomiting cat feel better. Fluid therapy, medications like antiemetic drugs, and changes in diet might be recommended. Ultimately, the treatment will be based on the diagnosis. So, if there are parasites, treatments to remove them will be ordered, whereas obstructions might need surgical removal, and infections might require antibiotics, as a few examples.If the vomiting is considered acute and mild, your veterinarian might start by recommending that you fast your kitty for a certain number of hours before providing her with a small amount of a bland diet that’s easy to digest. Gradually, you’ll reintroduce her normal diet once the symptoms subside.Your Vet Will Know If You Need to Be WorriedKeep in mind that vomiting is a symptom, not a disease. If your healthy kitty occasionally vomits, your vet might say that it isn’t anything to worry about.
