Young or Old? These Outdoor Toys Are Perfect for Dog Park Action
Young or old, big or small...regardless of the breed, all dogs love visiting a leash-free park where they can move at their own pace. For me, my Schnoodles love the idea of a dog park, but once we arrive, they tend to stick like glue and walk at a slower pace beside (or often behind) me. They’re not afraid of getting lost – they know the trails of our regular haunt inside out – but the idea of running and frolicking seems to have disappeared into the ether the moment they jumped out of the car.
Whether you live with a large, highly active dog that needs a hard run to burn off energy or like me, a smaller, older pet that needs a little more incentive to come out of their shell, we’ve found eight different motivators that are sure to maximize your time in a leash-free zone.
Loving this right-sized bouncy ball for dogs that tend to turn their fave tennis ball into a gloopy, sloppy mess each time they return it to you for another throw. Made with patented Rebound-O-Last material for a clean, non-absorbent finish and a little extra bounce, this ball comes in two sizes – 6.5-inch for dogs over 30 pounds and a smaller, 3.75-inch for pint-sized pooches. Not only is it shaped for easy collection and mouthing by your dog, but it even makes sounds. And even older dogs love anything that makes a noise.
The dream toy of every dog that loves to chase a tennis ball has to be this super-sized, 9.5-inch version in a non-toxic, soft, felt finish. Natural rubber ensures he enjoys maximum bounce while the inflatable design (yep, pull out the bike pump) means it’s ultra-lightweight and perfect for tossing into a lake or pool for a wet game of fetch. For older dogs, the larger format makes it easy to spot and chase, keeping them active and engaged regardless of whether you’re dealing with loss of vision. Maybe not the ideal pick for heavy chewers.
QDAN Glow in The Dark Dog Toys
If your ventures to the leash-free tend to happen early morning or later evening when dusk is setting in, you’re going to love this glow-in-the-dark soccer ball. Made from a premium thermoplastic polymer similar to that of standard soccer balls, this illuminated ball is perfect for a kick-around with your pooch. Just leave it in the sun or under a light source for 10 to 20 minutes before heading out, and you’ll have a fluorescent, neon target that your pooch can track and chase for up to three hours. Best of all, when he’s packed it in, this ball is a snap to find.
While most dogs love a good game of fetch and return, for others, nothing beats the classic tug-of-war. While some may feel this type of activity promotes negative behaviors, the American Kennel Club (AKC) disagrees. That guru of “all-things-dog”, feels it taps into a dog’s natural drives and can be highly motivational for them while also helping them burn off energy. “By letting your dog “win” during a game of tug, you aren’t letting them dominate you. Instead, you’re nurturing a solid rapport and teaching them that engaging with you is fun and rewarding.”
So, let’s look at some of the outdoor toys that support tugging and pulling.
If you’re like me, you’ve probably wondered how a dog can tug at anything for long periods without losing teeth. Well, this Mammoth pull toy is made from premium North American Cotton/Poly yarns that are not only easy on Rover’s pearly whites, but actually help clean his teeth as he’s yanking away in a game of tug-of-war with you. Strategically placed knots help you both get a grip for a well-matched session. And when you finally give up, this tug rope reverts to a safe, non-toxic chew toy for your pet. Sized for medium or large dogs.
LOOBANI Outdoor Bungee Tug Toy
I love this idea for those with larger dogs or who simply don’t have the shoulder/arm strength to engage in a lengthy game of tug-of-war with their dog. Think bungee cord and you’ll get the picture. You attach this adjustable tug toy to a tree limb, tree trunk, or even a beam or rail on your deck. The tether hangs down and dangles a toy that your pet can pull and tug at for hours on his own. And with the sling-shot action shooting the toy all over the place, he’s spurred on to keep tracking and grabbing until he’s tuckered out.
If your dog is a fiend for both tugging and fetching, have we got the perfect outdoor toy for you… rather, your pet. This combo dog toy includes a bouncy ball for your pet to chase, capture, and return to you but there’s a difference - that dog ball is attached to a durable 2-ply nylon strap. So, no more scooping a slimy ball out of your pet’s mouth for a re-throw. Instead, you grab the strap and can engage in a fun game of tug or, if your pooch prefers, simply pitch the ball for him to chase again. Perfectly sized for popping into your standard Chuckit! Launcher for added distance.
For those with dogs who are born to run, leap, and fly during their outdoor exercise sessions, you’re looking for something that can send your pup into high-energy mode. Here are two we think fit the bill.
The name says it all. This natural rubber flying disc is perfect for dogs who want to work for their reward. And because it’s made from the same safe, top-quality materials as the classic Kong chew toy, it’s not only super durable but delivers a little added bounce when it hits the ground. So, when Rover misses that mid-air catch, this Frisbee-style disc rebounds back up to give him a couple more chances to catch and capture… and a little more high-energy fun.
Chuckit! Sport 12M Dog Ball Launcher
No outdoor activity is complete without a classic Chuckit! launcher. For pet owners whose dogs want to chase and fetch for hours, this dog ball launcher is the only way to go. Compact in size, this sling-style ball thrower can repeatedly send your pet’s fave tennis ball further than you could ever dream of. Tire him out faster, save your arm and shoulder, and keep your pet happy, healthy, and super-fit in the process.
