Wherever we’ve lived, we’ve always had weather that warranted flea and tick prevention for our pets. Even when it’s cold and snowy (ahem, story of the winter!) veterinarians recommend you give your pet flea and tick prevention medications.

Why? Well, believe it or not, fleas and ticks are pretty resilient! Fleas can withstand temps as low as 33 degrees Fahrenheit while ticks can take temps as low as 40 degrees.

Plus, while you may be hanging out in the middle of Minnesota under seven feet of snow, think of families traveling from warmer climates and possibly bringing fleas and ticks on their furry family members. Cold weather is definitely not the best protection against flea and ticks.

But a lot of us prefer more gentle preventions. Just as we worry about what we put in and on our human family member’s bodies, we want to keep our furry ones as safe as we can.

That’s why our holistic veterinarian recommends Frontline products over traditional prevention medicines like Bravecto, Nexguard or Simparica. Yes, Frontline has to be administered monthly (as do a couple of others) but it’s the most gentle of the meds, being applied topically with few side effects. As an active-duty military family, we’ve lived in some hotbeds for both fleas and ticks, and we’ve always been able to depend on Frontline products.
