PetSmart launched Buy a Bag, Give a Meal pet food donation program. And they’ve met their goal of providing 60 million meals to pets in need all across the United States and Canada.

Each year, over 6 million pets enter the shelters across the country. The volunteers, rescuers, and shelter workers are struggling, day in and day out, to keep the animals in their care healthy and well-fed.

But, with the help of PetSmart and their customers, animal welfare organizations can now provide meals for their four-legged protégées who need it the most. Each bag of food purchased in one of the retail giant’s shops or online is matched by a donated meal, and the numbers are more than encouraging. Over 6,000 tons of food is to be donated, and the campaign is not over yet!

“We are thrilled to achieve our program goal of 60 million meals for our Buy a Bag, Give a Meal program with several weeks still left in this historic campaign,” said Joshua Kanter, PetSmart’s executive vice president of marketing and customer experience. “This program is generating impactful results, having already delivered more than 3,600 tons of pet food across hundreds of cities in the U.S. and Canada to help pets in need at shelters, as well as to pets who are with families in need served by food banks, pantries, and meal programs.”

Little over the weight of 800 elephants or a volume of two and a half Olympic size pools. That’s how much food PetSmart is donating to homeless cats and dogs. But the whopping 6,384 tons of food is a number to beat, as the historic campaign is still in effect- until December 31st.
