Even if tailgate parties aren’t your thing, we all love to watch the Super Bowl… for the commercials. And this year, Heinz’s 30 second Super Bowl ad, titled “Wiener Stampede,” takes the trophy. Basically, Heinz has won our customer loyal forever by donning dozens of dachshunds in hot dog costumes and letting them loose to bound across a meadow toward the welcoming arms of a family in condiment outfits – all while the break-up ballad “Without You” plays in the background. A trip to Fredericton, New Brunswick was the perfect place to take a pet-friendly vacation with my jet-setting bestie, Oscar. I’d never gone on a vacation that was expressly taken with my dog’s comfort in mind, so I was excited to share this adventure with him. The trip would require us to take a plane to our destination, stay at a pet-friendly hotel, and visit tourist attractions that welcomed both humans and pooches. If you’re travelling on a plane with your dog, there are a few essentials you’ll want in your suitcase. The only time there was a fuss was when we were landing – poor Oscar couldn’t pop his ears. Getting Around There’s no Uber in Fredericton, so we had to take a cab everywhere. But honestly, the fares were pretty cheap (compared to Toronto, they were a downright steal!) and ordering service was quick and easy. Handsome and smart- a combination that will steal your heart! Our Adoptable Dog of the Week is Roulette, a 2 years old Spaniel and Bulldog mix from Cheyenne, Wyoming. This lovely big guy is neutered, fully trained, and up to date on his vaccinations. Rou, as his rescuers call him, is a friendly, playful dog that gets along well with dogs and kids, but needs a cat-free home. Roulette’s Tale Roulette, or Rou for short, is a charming fella with a big heart- he will steal your heart in an instant. He is a happy-go-lucky dog with a lot of energy and will appreciate having someone to play with him, whether his owner or a furry roommate or even better- both. He loves to play rowdy and rambunctious with other pooches, though, so it’s best for his new dog friends to be similar to him size-wise. Roulette is over 60 pounds. He is not a fan of felines, so it’s best if he goes to a family that doesn’t have cats. He loves kids and does well with them- if they are big enough to play with him, all the better! Oh Roulette! Canines Evolved a Special Muscle to Make Those Disarming ‘Puppy Dog

If you find it too hard to resist to your pet’s pleading puppy dog eyes or completely melt at your pet’s slanted eyebrows when they try to figure out something, it seems that it’s all about evolution. A new study reveals another piece of the puzzle that is the human-canine communication. We all know THAT look. The slanted eyebrows that make your dog’s eyes appear larger, sadder, and more appealing to humans. In other words, the look perfectly tailored to manipulate a treat, a walk to the park, or a belly rub out of you. But, if you thought that these devious and adorable tactics are unique to your pooch, you’ve been sorely mistaken. A team of scientists revealed that the so-called puppy dog eyes are a product of evolution and that all dogs are using this facial expression to communicate. The study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences speaks about the effects of domestication on the very anatomy of dogs- as well as the purpose of these evolutionary changes. What we usually call the puppy dog eyes, scientists have dubbed ‘AU101: inner eyebrow raise’. Their findings indicate that the muscle responsible for the inner eyebrow raise is present in dogs but not in wolves- which also coincides with the fact that dogs do make more facial expressions that involve eyebrows than their wild cousins do. The scientists hypothesize that the reason why dogs have evolved to make that particular face is to trigger a nurturing response in humans. (And, boy, does it work.) The idea is that the puppy dog eyes were the result of selection based on human preferences: the expression is similar to that we make when sad, so it’s perfect for tugging on heartstrings, in a nutshell. Additionally, as the study involved dogs of various breeds and a mutt, scientists were able to determine that Siberian Huskies, like the wolves, don’t have the inner eyebrow muscle needed to make the soulful face that knocks us off our feet. That might be the reason why they are so vocal in their attempts of communication? Who knows! In the end, it seems that there is a lot we are yet to find out about our intricate relationship with dogs. But until then, the next time your pooch manages to trick you for an extra treat with his big, soulful eyes, don’t feel bad. After all, it’s a ploy that’s been 33,000 years in the making. Take A Hike: Adventures In Dog Hiking Part 1

A-hiking we will go! Oscar and I take on the challenge of dog hiking Oscar and I decided we needed a new challenge this summer. We’re not the most athletic pair – you could call us couch cuddle enablers. But since I’m the responsible one in the relationship, it was up to me to pick a new summer activity and get us off our butts. Picking one that would suit the both of us was a challenge in itself. Oscar is a 10 pound Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix who is content at barking at dogs visiting the neighboring vet’s office. We needed something that he would be able to accomplish physically but wouldn’t bore us both to pieces. The options didn’t look promising. That was, until I met Jessica Rhae from You Did What With Your Weiner? I know – that site sounds way dirtier than it actually is! But this is a website that’s dedicated to Jessica’s hiking adventures with her two miniature Dachshunds, Chester and Gretel. If those two little pooches can climb mountains and rocky trails, there’s no reason why Oscar and I can’t do it! Because I’m such a hiking noob, Jessica was generous with her advice and was happy to pass along just a few of the things she thought I’d need to know on my first hike. Because this was my first hike, she suggested that I keep it short. If we were to get tired or whiny (that would be me, not Oscar), it would be much easier to bail. Jessica wisely notes that the goal of your first hike is to make it positive – that way, you’re more likely to want to do it again. A good jumping-off point would be about two to three hours, at a distance of three to five miles. Are You Always Under Stress? Study Show Your Dog Mirrors Your Bad Fee

The recently done research confirms what dog people all over the world have suspected for decades- dogs feel everything you do, and to a staggering extent. How many times have you come back from work depressed or tense and plagued by worries, only to have your pooch come up to you and seem like they understand your woes perfectly? Well, according to scientists, this no coincidence. Not only that dogs understand your emotions quite well, but they also mirror the stress levels you experience. The team of Swedish researchers focused on tracking cortisol, a stress hormone, in the hair of both humans and their four-legged best friends. Interestingly enough, the hormone which indicates how much stress we are under circulates through blood but leaves traces in hair, which makes it perfect for scientists to monitor. The study involved 25 Border Collies, 33 Shetland Sheepdogs, and their female owners- some of the dogs were just pets, others were also competing in dog sports “on the side”. The findings were interesting, to say the least. They indicate the existence of a long-term emotional convergence between dogs and their owners, but there are also some subtle differences. For instance, it seems that female dogs, as well as those participating in agility and other sports, feel the stress more keenly than male companions. Surprisingly, dogs whose owners scored higher on neuroticism had lower stress levels- hinting that owners personalities could also play a role in the way dogs experience stress. In the words of the study’s lead scientists, this is the first time that a long-term synchronization in stress levels between members of two different species has been documented. Fascinating, am I right? Of course, this also means that all those bad vibes and negative feelings you’ve been experiencing are something your dog picks up and internalizes, as well. So the next time you catch yourself stressing over the small stuff, just let it go: your fur baby will be thankful for your new-found chill.

Many millennial pet parents want to bring their four-legged babies with them to work, and major companies are keen to accommodate them. According to Rover, here are the companies that outdo the rest when it comes to their dog-friendly workplaces. With pets in the workplace being a rising trend and a requirement for many, it’s no wonder that companies are now competing to offer a pet-friendly working environment in an effort to attract millennial talent. New generations are redefining the role of pets in their lives and with it, the pet-friendliness of workplaces are also changing. What was an unimaginable perk 30 years ago, now is becoming the standard for many companies who welcome four-legged visitors to their premises. As the trend of dog-friendly workplaces is growing, people at Rover set out to determine which of the companies take the cake when it comes to their pet-friendliness factor. They compared companies across the United States and dog benefits they offer to their employees. The first and most basic perk was, naturally, that they allow dogs in the workplace in the first place. Next, there were some other benefits that would entice any dog pawrent to come work in a company that offers them. These include financial support for pet insurance and/or adoption, in-office amenities for dogs, as well as paid time off for pet bereavement or adoption adjustment period. With these criteria in mind, Rover came up with the list of 100 best dog-friendly companies for 2019, all ranked according to the perks they offer. The number one company on that list was Amazon, whose HQ is located in Seattle, WA. The e-commerce giant has over 6,000 registered dogs on their campus (which is enough to make you come work for them- good boys and girls all around) who enjoy perks such as free treats, poop bags, and a having a deck on one of the company’s floors that’s made for playing and running around.

Kitties and Purrsonality: Study Shows Cats Inherit Behavioral Traits F

The study, which was first of its kind, revealed that not only that different breeds of cats have different behaviors, but also that those traits are highly heritable. We already know that every cat has a unique pawsonality. Some felines are sweet, cuddly and people-oriented, others are more in touch with their hunter instincts and live for adventure, others can be moody and even prone to aggression. This is especially true for different breeds of cats. Not only that a Siamese and a Scottish Fold look nothing alike, but there are also significant differences in their behavior and temperament. So what is the reason behind such variations and contrasts? Science says: your kitty got it from her momma. A study published in Nature Research journal was first of its kind to track heritability of traits in felines. The team of scientists from Helsinki was focused on 3 specific cat breeds- Maine Coon, Ragdoll, and Turkish Van- and they monitored behaviors such as activity level, sociability with humans, shyness, aggressiveness, and stereotypical behavior. Some of the differences that could be noticed among the feline subjects, namely activity, and stereotypical behavior, were largely influenced by other factors such as age and environment. However, the researchers managed to see a pattern of highly heritable behaviors- according to their findings, a little less of half of a cat’s behavioral traits seem to be inherited from the parents. As to why some behavioral traits seem to be highly heritable, researchers are yet to give their hypothesis. It could be that generations of selective breeding have left their mark in more ways than one, or that certain appearance traits come with certain behaviors encoded in the genes. The most important thing, though, is that not only that this study furthermore highlighted the uniqueness of cat’s personalities even within a breed, but it also created the world’s second largest body of material on feline behavior. It involves data on 6,000 cats of 40 different breeds, leaving room for more future studies about our mysterious furry companions.
