Feel like drinking coffee with a cat on your lap? Be sure to visit these cat cafes if you’re ever in these cities.

Cat cafés are popping up around the world, but which ones are considered the best out there? The list below will help direct you to some of the must-visit cafés where you could enjoy a cup of coffee or tea while meeting some friendly felines…and maybe even adopt one, too!

Crumbs & Whiskers

Crumbs & Whiskers is more than just a cat café, it also serves as a kitty rescue. As of this writing, their website states that 638 cats have been adopted and 1,420 cats have been saved from euthanasia. With one location in Washington, D.C. and another in Los Angeles, California, they’ve managed to create unique spaces where people can unwind and socialize while interacting with kitties that are up for adoption. And the cats get to wait for their forever home in a comfortable environment, rather than in a cage in a frightening shelter. To get in, you have to make a booking by submitting a contribution, which serves as an admission fee that allows the staff to care for the animals.

Le Café des Chats

Le Café des Chats, located in Paris, is the first cat café to open in France. There are rules for interacting with the cats, and none of the kitties are up for adoption, as they live there and roam around freely. But, if you are interested in adopting, the staff will gladly help you by giving you information on shelters with pets in need of homes. Plus, the cats that you will meet in the café were also adopted from animal welfare groups in the area, so if you can’t adopt at the moment, you could feel good by helping to support these kitties and their caretakers.

La Gatoteca

Located in Madrid, Spain, La Gatoteca is managed by ABRIGA, which is a non-profit organization. They work on educating the public about adoption, while also rescuing cats and giving them a sanctuary within the café until they find forever homes. You could visit the café and spend time with the cats, as they benefit from positive interactions with people. But if you do fall in love with one of the kitties, you could talk to the staff about the process for adopting your furry friend.

Give Purrs a Chance

This cat café, which is located in West Virginia, doesn’t only boast a fantastic name; it’s also found within a unique 2-story Victorian house. As of this writing, this non-profit adoption center has been able to place more than 200 kittens and cats since it opened in 2017. The staff works with several local rescue groups, and the felines who are up for adoption are spayed/neutered and vetted. Plus, they’re allowed to roam freely throughout the house, so this is considered the biggest cat café in the United States. There is an admission fee, which helps support the work of the café, but once you pay, you’re allowed to sit and relax, play with the kitties, and maybe even meet your new companion.

Whether you want to just sip tea and chill with a cat in your lap or you’re ready to adopt a kitty in need of a home, there might be a cat café in your neighborhood that could give you the chance to meet some friendly felines.
